I keep trying to put The Magicians out of my head, and each time I do, I think of something else in it that offends me! Some of it stuff that I don't usually notice (including privilege, race, class, and gender. That on top of the HP and Narnia issues + interaction with source texts is giving me a huge pile of things to talk about)! Seriously, I don't know whether to be impressed with Grossman or what.

I still have not decided what to do with Dust 20 (a.k.a. gangs of Cair Paravel), despite having had a second pair of eyes on it. The thing is that if this wasn't fic, I wouldn't hesitate at all to put it in, but it is fic, and I have a loose enough grasp on canon as it is. Do I really want to add more to it? But it might be necessary, and I like the contrast in setting between Dust 19 and the streets of Cair Paravel and Dust 21 and the coming chapters. Agh, don't know, don't know. I don't even know if I should finish it or just write the next chapter and think about it later!

In conclusion, the VotDT trailer in HD. Because WHY NOT?

I can't speak for anybody else, but I'm fine with very little canon. (This, perhaps, comes from coming into fandom via DC fanfiction, the canon of which is impossible to not contradict)

And Narnia fic seems to be particularly- not canon-divergent, but...authorial-intent divergent?

If this doesn't make sense it's probably because I'm tired.

Ha, I came into Narnia fic via Star Wars fandom (my first fandom was HP), which has layers of canon like the DCU, so I tend to pick and choose my canon. Which is not that common, I guess. So -- yeah, that makes sense.

Well, most fandoms only have one or two (in the case of book-made-movie or TV series) canons that don't contradict each other to any great degree, so there isn't much need or possibility to pick and choose what canon you're going to use or not use. Whereas the DCU...when the canon writers don't stick to one canon, it's kind of insane to try to stick to one yourself. I'm actually kind of shocked by Narnia, though; the movies seem more book-compliant than most adaptations are, but the fic diverges more than other canons (which is not the right way to describe it, but hopefully you get my meaning).

As a side note, I find it kind of weird that so many people go along with CS Lewis's timeline of reigning for 15 years, since I at least don't call that the long reign LWW said they had.

Narnia kind of fascinates me because there is, sort of, a demarcation between the people who use book canon and the people who use movie canon, or movie canon + book canon (I am actually the only one I've seen who does that, I think, but I don't read in the fandom anymore). True story: way back when PC first came out two years ago, I had a minor panic attack over whether or not it was acceptable by fandom standards to use movie canon rather than book canon, because when I was in HP fandom, people were mocked for using movie canon, or even for combining the two. (Although come to think of it, the author I know who did that came out of the X-Men movieverse + Marvel, so there was precedent.)

Really? I've seen the book canon/movie canon demarcation in other fandoms, but to be honest in the case of Narnia I'm completely unable to tell which one people are using unless they say, and I haven't noticed a lot of people saying which they're using. Unless you're talking between the fen rather than in the fic? Because I don't participate actively enough in any fandom to notice that.

This probably isn't helping at all, but I'd absolutely LOVE to see Gangs of Cair Paravel. We got a taste of what life is like in the city in some of the previous chapters of Dust, but that was through the eyes of people who don't actually live there (I don't count Tirian as a resident since he's been hiding in other parts of the kingdom for the past 5 years).

I admit, I am curious as to what this chapter is about. I'm assuming it has something to do with Peter wanting spies all around the city and the castle, and how to smuggle all those supplies he and Elizar's henchmen have bought/stolen to aid in the Free Narnia! effort.

Are you more concerned that it's not adhering to general Narnia canon, or to your current Dust/Warsverse canon? It won't matter too much with the former considering how AU the story already is.

Not exactly. I won't say more at this point in time, but it's less to do with the Pevensies and more to do with life in Cair Paravel itself.
