Western!AU
Dec. 4th, 2005 04:28 pmI feel bad because I haven't been writing much fanfic. I mean, I've been writing, but it's all original fic and my characters have the emotional depth of teaspoons, much like a certain detective. So, a little more of the Western!AU. Takes place immediately after the previous fic clip.
Aiden, when she steps away from the door, looks a little more time- and travel-worn than she did the last itme she was in town. Danny doesn't say anything, but instead goes immediately to the bar to pour a shot of whiskey, then goes back around the bar to touch Aiden lightly on the arma nd hand it to her. She takes it and looks back at Danny and something worldess passes between them.
Mac glances away. This is private, and there are more important things to think about. "Lindsay will be all right with you?" he asks.
"Well, of course," Stella says dryly. "I'm not going to throw her out on the street as soon as the going gets tough. You know me better than that, Mac."
Mac bites his lip. "It's only polite to ask," he says shortly, and Stella rolls her eyes.
"It's good to see that badge hasn't changed you one bit," she says. "Aiden -"
The other woman turns away from Danny. "Yeah, Stella?"
"Is Flack with you?"
Aiden shakes her head. "Nah, he's still n the road, with the herd an' a couple of cowboys we picked up in Texas. You'll like 'em, Stella. They should fit in just fine." She hesitates briefly, then plunges ahead. "I'm kinda worried aobut him, though, Stella. He and Gavin were real close, and I don't wanna see him hanged for the murder of a murderer, if he finds the guy before the new sheriff does."
"Who?" Mac asks sharply.
She makes a face. "That piece'a piss Horatio Caine, if you can believe it. I got no idea what Grissom was thinking when he appointed the guy, but hey, mayve he wasn't."
Stella snorts. "If I know Gavin, he's more pissed off about Caine being appointed than about being murdered."
"Horatio Caine is an upjumped -" Mac says angrily. "He was outlawed from Miami because when it was found he was taking bribes, and Gil Grissom appointed him sheriff? There's no one that would be worse."
"Mac, you're the only sheriff in the west that's not taking bribes," Stella says dryly. "Aiden, you said something about plague?"
She nods. "Smallpox. There's a family of five buried on the road, new graves, and their wagon's been abandoned with everything left inside. Do you know how hard it is to steer two hundred and fity head of cattle around something like that? Not fun. Makes me glad we picked up the new cowhands with the herd; Flack and I couldn't have done it by ourselves."
And that's all I have.
