Hate computers. Haaaaaaate computers. Am torn between trying to fuck around in the registry or just doing a full reformat.

ETA: Current situation: ran MalwareBytes in safe mode, which pulled up two files and deleted them, ran it again in regular mode, didn't find anything. A couple of websites I've looked at have the apparent registry files noted, which I went and looked up in the registry of my comp, and about half of them are there, but since the top ones aren't (AVsuite and the tssd.exe), I really don't want to touch anything because the last thing I want to do is fuck up my computer more. I also tried to system restore back to about mid-July, which my computer refused to do, the bastard, because the OS is corrupted or something exciting like that? So that was exciting. I do have the Vista reinstall disk, I think, so I could try reformatting, but the thing is I think it's going to mess with my iPod, which seems a little minor in comparison to, you know, my computer having a virus, but you know how iPods can only be attached to three computers at a time or something? And the last time I system restored my computer, my iPod didn't recognize it as the same computer, which means that my iPod is now attached to three computers, despite the fact that two are the same computers and I don't use the old computer.

Yes. I hate my life too. My laptop appears to be all right, but it appeared to be all right the last three times too (I'm on it right now), and if this thing shows up again I'm going to throw up my hands and take it to a shop. Also, now my Yahoo! homepage isn't even showing up centered I HATE EVERYTHING. *curls up and sobs*

About your ipod problems though - I know there are programs where you can rip all the content off of your ipod and store and transfer it from computer to computer around all the antipiracy stuff.

Just wanted you to know that all is not lost on that front. I'll comment back with links?

It looks like it might be five computers instead of three, so that's...slightly more reassuring.

also possibly I am a little emotional right now. Guess what I have spent my WHOLE DAY doing? (aside from when we went to Yakima, but it was scanning in the background then.)

NOW THAT I NO LONGER TRUST MY COMPUTER...I think I am going to take it into the shop anyway, because I don't need the added level of stress that worrying about it is going to bring (has already brought, whee). Also, see above, I do not trust this computer.

backup everything. take the computer to the computer repair guys. let the nice computer repair people do their thing. ask for a hardware test in addition to anything else they do.

This is what I am leaning towards. Monday. Tomorrow they probably shall not be open, but Monday they should be, and fortunately everything is already backed up, I think. Most stuff is still on my external hard drive from the last time my computer tried fucking with me.

if you don't mind possibly losing some metadata you can just copy the songs directly off an ipod and onto another hard drive. it gets a little alphabet soupish sometimes, but i've done it before in emergencies. the process goes something like plug in ipod, open up ipod through my computer, show hidden folders, and then copy paste the music folder. itunes usually can reinterpret it's own shorthand back into something that makes sense for humans.

That's what I've done the last couple times -- hurrah for having a PC and not a Mac, because I think you cannot do that on a Mac! -- it's just...well, exhausting. For some reason the last time I did it I ended up with, like, multiple copies of the same file on iTunes last time? Only most of them didn't actually have anything behind them, they were just there on iTunes cluttering up everything. (Actually, they're still there; the only way I know to remove them is manually and I have a lot of music.)

You can deauthorize a computer from an iPod, so if you can get the stuff backed up or know you can re-download it, you could possibly deauthorize the computer before completely reformatting.
