So, Maryland had previously said that it was okay for me to use her baking/cooking stuff -- mainly various oils, spices, that sort of thing rather than me taking all her vegetables or something -- and we sort of switch off buying flour and sugar, that sort of thing. Only we were talking the other day, and I mentioned that when I baked something, I kind of wanted to keep some of it for myself, you know? Like if I'm going to bake muffins or something, I don't really want to give all of them to everyone else in the apartment; I'm more likely to try and halve the recipe so that I have something I can grab quickly and eat if I suddenly go, "OMG I MUST EAT SOMETHING OR DIE." Because that's the thing about baking rather than cooking: you can make things in advance. And she got this weird look on her face and said, "Well, when I bake, I just assume that I'm never going to eat it all and so I just feed it for everyone. That's what happens when you live in an apartment, baked goods are common fare." Which is sort of the opposite of what I was saying? And I was trying to explain why I felt that way, without saying, "Um, also I spent my own money on most of this stuff."

So the other day I go into the kitchen and she's moved all the oils; I didn't know if it was because she was out or because she didn't want me to use them. When I asked, it was the latter. "Well, since you said you were only going to bake for yourself, I think we should each use our own ingredients." Which is fine, I just wish she had told me this BEFORE I WENT TO THE GROCERY STORE RATHER THAN AFTERWARDS. Also I am very tempted to move the sugar and brown sugar I just bought back into my own two shelves of the cupboard, rather than the general baking area, although that seems rather petty. I need to reorganize; I don't really have room. I might get shelves or something for my room, because somehow I have the only room in the apartment that didn't come with its own little bookshelf. I think it might be the one in the common area. Um. Well, maybe when Minnesota moves out at the end of the semester I can take one from her room.

*scowls* Now I have to go to the grocery store. Which I don't have time for, but I was planning on cooking tonight, and I need olive oil and canola oil and various spices. Fuck. My. Life. I just went to Whole Foods yesterday, and I don't have time today, but Christ Jesus on a crutch, tell me this when I have time to go shop, rather than when I'm trying to make time to read six hundred pages before Wednesday, and having a meeting to go to. I kind of get the impression that unless I asked, she wasn't going to tell me, either. Seriously, I don't care, I can afford it, just tell me. And it's not as if we don't see each other all the time; we live together, we have common interests, we talk a lot, you know? Doesn't take that much time to communicate it. She even could have e-mailed me if she didn't want to say it face to face, you know? Again, preferably before I went shopping rather than afterwards.

Hey, does anyone know if you have to be 21 in the U.S. to buy cooking alcohol, like mirin (Japanese rice wine)?

ETA: And now it is raining. Fuck you, world. MacMart for olive oil and black pepper, I guess; they're in the midst of restocking so it's kind of hard to get at anything else.

You have to be 18 in the UK-- if it has alcohol in it, presumably they're worrying that people might buy it and drink it. (Personally, I don't cook with anything I wouldn't drink. Um. Mostly because I start a bottle for a casserole then finish it with some drinks so it doesn't go vinegar-y)

Are you specifically asking about mirin, or cooking wine in general?

If it's mirin, I think you should be okay. They don't stock that with the rest of the liquor in stores I go to; it's always in the cooking section with soy sauce and other similar items. I don't see why they would you card you for that. Then again, I've only really paid attention to that in Asian grocery stores, so I don't know how it would be in a non-Asian shop.
