happy thanksgiving

I have been in the kitchen ALL DAY. Oof. My legs hurt. Pie from scratch, for these mini pumpkin pies, although the pumpkin came out of a can, as I didn't feel like carrying a pumpkin back from Whole Foods, rolls from scratch, giant turkey breast roasted (came out slightly dry -- I couldn't get the meat thermometer to read over 160, so I left Henry in the oven longer than I really should have), delicata squash stuffed and roasted. Alaska made some kind of sweet potato casserole and New York made a risotto-style mushroom pasta (NOM), and we barely made a dent in all of it. However, we did have SO MANY DISHES, which are now all done except for one roasting pan which has oil stuck to the sides, fail, and which if I don't get clean Maryland may shoot me. (However, if her alarm clock goes off again tomorrow morning, I may shoot that.)

I never get oil stuck to pans at home. Why does it continually happen here? *frowns*

I have a lot of fresh herbs left over, and a bunch of nuts. Not entirely sure what to do there -- I may try and make some kind of pesto.

Any Black Friday shopping will be done in the form of online shopping, as there is no power on this earth that will make me get up to go stand in line at 4 am. HELL NO. We may go and see HP7, and I need to start in on my Vikings paper.

I've been Black Friday shopping all week. Amazon's lightning deals. So far I've scored Burn Notice S1 DVD for eight dollars, among other things.

I keep forgetting about that. *muses* Also I forgot that a lot of online sales start at midnight, and now all the things I want are sold out. *sad* Although it's not like I need any more yarn, seriously.

Amazon's got another week of lightning deals. Planning on scoring a Michael Moore film for (estimated) two dollars and Fringe S1 for (estimated) eight dollars.

A turkey breast doesn't need to cook any higher than 150°, 155° due to carry over cooking.

(Why yes, I know too much about roasting fowl.)

I wish I'd known that last night! Oh well, at least it gave the squash and the risotto time to cook.

I will keep that in mind the next time I prepare to roast a bird! Next time I get a whole turkey I shall name it Edward...or would that be indelicate?

Making the possibly unfounded assumption that you mean a Jack-o-Lantern-type pumpkin... if you wanna make pie, sugar pumpkins are the way to go. They're much smaller and vastly tastier. Just make sure you get a sugar pumpkin (I've also seen them called pie pumpkins) instead of one of the mini decorative varieties.

I will keep that in mind for the future! I walk two miles to and two miles back from the grocery store, so a consideration for what I can actually carry is of vast importance. (I once had a day when I had to get flour, canola oil, vinegar, apples, and other heavy items...and it looked like it was about to start raining at any moment. That was a fun walk.)

I remember that kind of grocery shopping from college... :P But yeah, sugar pumpkins are about the size of a small cantaloupe. (The seeds are also much, much better for roasting and eating.)
