Looking at graduate schools again. UNC-Chapel Hill looks it might be off the list because the program in medieval history doesn't look particularly strong, Cornell however is on the list because it has one professor whose name I recognize (AND he does Greek and Roman military history!) and the medieval history faculty appear to actually be relevant to my interests. Brown is still tentatively on my list, though I am judging them because their website is not organized in such a way that finding faculty whose fields are in my area of interest is actually easy. (Hint: "European History" is not at all specific. That's sort of a vast span of time and space, and there's a huge difference between someone who studies classical Greece and someone who studies modern Britain. IT WOULD BE NICE IF STUDENTS COULD FIGURE THAT OUT WITHOUT HAVING TO LOOK AT EVERY SINGLE FACULTY MEMBER.) Stanford's off the list: no faculty in my field of interest (medieval OR ancient; weird, Stanford). University of Washington is still on the list, of course.

(The UW wins points for being kind enough to divide fields of study very specifically. Like I said, European history? Not at all specific. Demarcations of "ancient Greece," "ancient Rome," "Late Antiquity," Medieval to 1450," and so on and so forth? Very specific.)

Also, this is sort of obvious, but I just figured it out: the reason that there are so many people whose primary fields of research are in (a) law or (b) the church is because, uh, that's where the records are. Duh, Bed.

Oh, hey, Yale has someone who does ancient food history. Rock on, Yale. Not that it is entirely likely I can get into Yale, but, you know. Awesome. Oh, wow, another person who does food history, this time medieval! Oooh, and a guy who does medieval Scandinavia: Yale, on the list. Huh, Yale has a medieval studies program (conspiracy!) too. Interestingly, Yale also offers a M.Phil -- I've never seen another American university do that, I don't think it's a degree much offered at American universities.

Oh, right. I forgot the University of Chicago was insane. On the list, but I, um, just really don't want to go to Chicago, for whatever reason.
