Wow. I just love it when my roommates tell me that my field of study is utterly irrelevant to the real world.

I never know how to reply either, and I don't want to get into an argument because I hate conflict. Not that anyone particularly wants to be convinced.

Business students, man. I've never met anyone at university as judgmental of the liberal arts as a business student.

My other roommate is a psych major, and, well...she still gives me these looks of, "You care about these dead people why?"

"BECAUSE THEY'RE AWESOME." Only that doesn't tend to convince people very well...

Just tell them it's the best time machine humans have come up with so far and they're welcome to build a better one if they can. (OK so this is clearly aimed at my sciencey nemeses but still... :))

I have the sinking feeling that their reaction would be something along the lines of, "And we care about that why?"

Probably... business people do not seem to be concerned about the past or the future other than the one in immediate view.

I generally deal with this by being all "yup, so?", or being the first person to say "useless field of study". I have to train myself out of that if I actually want a career in it, though.

This is the same roommate that said that she would make her kid be a business major when s/he gets to university, because liberal arts degrees aren't worth shelling out money for. I like her as a person, I just! Agh. Accountants.

Strangely, "because it's awesome!" does not seem to be a winning argument with some people.

What, despite the fact that the top firms tend to actively recruit good liberal arts people because they like the way they think around a subject as well as about the subject itself?

It's happened multiple times, too. *sighs* Although after I'd gone to bed, she started in on my other roommate's plans to become a psychologist who works with Vietnamese-American communities on the Gulf. "They're just fine! They don't need your help! They wouldn't listen to you anyway!"

Hint: Roommate 1 is not Asian-American, although she has a Vietnamese-American friend. Neither is Roommate 2, for that matter, and there was some weird racial stuff flying around last night that I'm glad I wasn't in the room for.

But history is EVERYTHING. I'm listening to this audiobook about the city of Alexandria and it makes me cry in the car because HISTORY IS SO AWESOME.
