Wow. I just love it when my roommates tell me that my field of study is utterly irrelevant to the real world.

*headdesk*

I never know how to reply either, and I don't want to get into an argument because I hate conflict. Not that anyone particularly wants to be convinced.

Ohhhh I love it when people start going on about the Real World and how they excel at being present in it compared to other people.

It's scientists for me. I live with one, too, and oh boy. At least I can punch him when I get fed up, so that's something.

Just tell them it's the best time machine humans have come up with so far and they're welcome to build a better one if they can. (OK so this is clearly aimed at my sciencey nemeses but still... :))

Probably... business people do not seem to be concerned about the past or the future other than the one in immediate view.

Tell them that double-entry bookkeeping was a 14th century invention. Without the middle ages, YOUR DEGREE WOULD NOT EXIST.

Oh, ew.

I generally deal with this by being all "yup, so?", or being the first person to say "useless field of study". I have to train myself out of that if I actually want a career in it, though.

What, despite the fact that the top firms tend to actively recruit good liberal arts people because they like the way they think around a subject as well as about the subject itself?

I've said it to [personal profile] mathsnerd and I'll say it to you. Why do we not have the ability to kill or maim someone with our minds?!

Nope, it's Antony, but I'm sure Bones has that feeling sometimes too.

But ... But ...

But history is EVERYTHING. I'm listening to this audiobook about the city of Alexandria and it makes me cry in the car because HISTORY IS SO AWESOME.
