my life, boring as ever

Twitter is mocking me again (I can read, I just can't post, ARGH), as is my university. A classics course just opened up a public service section, which would be perfect; I could drop the U.S. history seminar and take Greek Art & Archaeology instead, except Greek Art & Archaeology happens to be at the same time as the Latin 2030 class I'm signed up for. Sure, there's another Latin 2030 class, but I really want to take it with this specific professor, which means that for now I'm stuck with New Orleans Hidden History. (Unless that Latin 2030 class gets cancelled -- there are only seven students registered for it right now -- in which case it would work out, but I don't want it to be cancelled, I want to take Frazel for Latin. He is also my second reader for my honors thesis.)

Ugh. Scheduling. (I still haven't gone and switched out High Roman Empire for Greek 1010, which I should do, but it's not like Intro Greek is going to fill up.) My schedule is still really stupid, and I'm unhappy with it -- I know I have too much on my plate, but I don't want to get rid of anything except the class I can't get rid of. *sighs* I kind of have the itching feeling that my schedule for next semester is functionally similar to what a grad schedule might be like, only with more classes. (Two 6000-level history seminars, two language classes, and a thesis. Plus my Chaucer lecture.)

In even less exciting news, I have what I assume is another canker sore on the inside of my left cheek, and it hurts like a motherfucker. I hate fucking canker sores, I get them every few months, usually on the inside of my lips, which is just about as inconvenient as it sounds. And there's not really much you can do, which is just as annoying. I think this one has gone onto a downturn, though. I'll do a saltwater wash, for lack of anything else. *sighs*

On the reading front: I have read my first Dorothy L. Sayers book (The Nine Tailors); I was not impressed. I have gone onto Bernard Cornwell's The Fort, which so far seems to be an extended excuse to write a good battle sequence. Hey, I can appreciate that, as at the moment I seem to be writing the same sort of thing, only with more ladies, and also, griffins.

Perhaps I shall make brownies. I kind of just want to curl up with PotC: AWE or Cutthroat Island and my knitting, but...eh.

Nine Tailors is definitely not the one you want to start with. It's probably my least favorite of the Wimsey books. You might try Strong Poison, which is the first one with Harriet.

I will allow that I was kind of hampered in my choice by the fact that my local library only had two Sayers books. (I forget what the other one was. *hands*)

Oh, scheduling fun! Meant, of course, in the most sarcastic of ways, because even when it goes the best it can, it's still no fun.

This time, at first I was terrified I wouldn't be able to get into anything relevant, because I'm transferring and it looked like everything was full before I even had an opportunity to sign up. And then, also because I'm transferring, I had to take the 6+ hour drive (each way) to New School to attend orientation. On the one day break from my summer Japanese class. But OMG, I didn't know that there were actually advisors in existence who were good rather than people you had to struggle against to get anything worked out. Apparently it's not a myth, though. I was shocked. (Of course, it probably helped that she has the overrides for all of the languagey classes, and that's what I'm taking, but it didn't affect things too much since I can't get into the Japanese class until they have my grades for this one, and I couldn't get into the Latin class because they didn't have a time or teacher yet, but it was pretty awesome.)

I hope you can get a schedule you like. And, you know, not die from overwork during fall semester.

OH GODS. My dearest sympathies. And yeah, advisors who are actually good is very helpful! I am quite fond of my advisor, even though she doesn't have any idea about major; at least she can tell me how to get into classes and what forms to have and so on.

I have classes I can drop, if need be. I just, you know, don't want to, since those are the ones which are relevant to my studies. (Later Medieval Spain and Chaucer. *sighs*)

Psh, you don't need all of those "required courses" that aren't relevant to your interests. Required is just another word for optional. (Oh, how I wish that was true...although in that case I'm pretty sure I'd just take more languages, and that probably wouldn't be a good thing; I might forget English)

It actually wasn't too bad, except that I had to turn in my essay late due to lack of computer to write it with. There was only like half an hour of telling us how "awesome" the school is! I thought it would be worse, considering that it's a cult school in a cult town (apparently, the town just closes down on game days, it's that much of a cult...if I die, blame football.)

It's the stupid public service requirement, that's what it is. My life would be so much easier if Tulane didn't have that sodding req.
