vanity fair (2004)

My reaction to seeing Vanity Fair for the first time (also I haven't read the book) can best be summed up with "What the actual fuck?" and also "Oh my god, James Purefoy in uniform, I want to climb you like a tree," which I guess answers the question of whether I still find men attractive or not. But mostly "what the actual fucking fuck?"

(I don't watch any period films. Is that typical?)

Sadly I could mostly only recognize Reese Witherspoon and James Purefoy and kept getting confused about who the hell everyone else was because I wasn't as familiar with their faces, so that was also exciting. It was a case of "is this Amelia? Is this Jane? Have they invented another character? who is Professor Kirke playing in this movie? am I supposed to know this guy in uniform?" (My facial recognition skills, as good as ever.) Along with the ever popular, "So which king of England is this?" (One of the Georges, right? My dad and I finally agreed that we are Americans, we got a revolution right here that says we don't have to know that.)

No, seriously. What the fuck?

George III, but it is the Regency period, when he went mad and started trying to make trees his Prime Ministers, etc. A Useful Guide, even if it does miss out that George III was the grandson of George II, his father having had an accident with a cricket bat.

Also, have you read An Infamous Army, by Georgette Heyer? If not, go and do so. Now.

I have not actually read any Heyer! Which is something lacking in my reading education. (I have also not read Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice or any other books of the sort, excepting Wuthering Heights, which was so long ago it doesn't count. Blame my father. *shrug*)

You should start with An Infamous Army, which has a description of Waterloo so good, Sandhurst used it.

My local library only has Simon the Coldheart and The Grand Sophy. Should I bother, or wait till I go back to school?

The Grand Sophy is very good, except for the unfortunate anti-Semitism in one chapter. (Jewish money-lender)

For some reason, I read James Purefoy as James McAvoy. I was thinking he wouldn't make a very tall tree to climb. Then I realised just who you'd actually written and decided yeah, he's enough of a tree to climb.

(My good friend Linda would totally race you to climb him like a tree, though.)
