Okay, so I'm applying for this three-week summer program at Stanford University (yes, the one in California). And the courses I'm applying for (you can only do one, for three weeks) are Particle Physics, Theory of Relativity, Creative Writing, Investigations in Humanities: Renaissance and Classical, Investigations in Humanities: Film, and Music Theory.

My mom doesn't want me to do Music Theory.

In fact, she says that if I only get accepted to Music Theory, she won't let me go, because she doesn't want to send me to Stanford for Music Theory. We've been arguing about this for the past two days. She says I don't practice enough to actually be dedicated to music, especially since I don't plan to be a professional musician.

Okay, so the plan of Double Major Music Theory/Ed-Anthropology doesn't mean much to her. (She says you can't make a living being a music teacher)

*headdesk*

I play five instruments, in four different ensembles, take three sets of private lessons, playing three Solo Ensemble pieces, got a II, a I-, and FIRST ALTERNATE FOR STATE, and I'm not dedicated to music? What the fuck? I want to take music theory.

Of course, the chances I'll get turned down to all the others is slim to none, so it's probably a moot point, but GRR!

It might not mean much, but I knew some kids who took Music Theory at CTY and really enjoyed it quite a bit. It sounds like this is a CTYish program so the point would be less credit than just enriching your brain, and music's your passion (or seems to be), so why shouldn't she let you go?

As for degrees and majors... there's plenty of jobs that just say "have a bachelor's" and in some it may *help* to have one "in a related field" (or it may be preferred), but it's really just the whole 'you stayed in college four years, wow!' kind of thing that employers are after. More that you stuck with something than one the something was.

Well, the program's $3700. On the other hand, my mother won't pay four thousand dollars so I can get my own bari, so. I might not even apply - I'm not sure i really want to spend three weeks away from home with a bunch of strangers, in dorms, in California, studying something I'm not entirely passionate about.

It's just - it's tiring, that's what it is, more than anything. I don't want to be a professional musician, but music is something I love. It's been part of my life for thirteen years, which is...quite a while. I'm much more interested in music theory than I am in particle physics or classical lit and no way in hell do I want to take writing classes, but...gah. *headdesk* It tires me out.

You know, the same way it does when you get one A- and your GPA drops from a 4.0 to a 3.984. They're more freaked about it than you are, since you, oh, know the qualifying factors (although there's also the part where I got all A's in my advanced/honors classes; the A- came from Trig Ordinary).
