CSI: NY fic: "Alter-Ego"
Feb. 15th, 2006 04:41 pmThree not-really-inter-connected drabbly-type belated Valentines. The first one takes place in canon, season two; the second one, the Bardverse, post-Bloody Sunday; the third one, in the "Through the Looking Glass" universe.
1.
On February 14, Stella takes one look at the caseload and starts caroling at the top of her lungs. "For the first shift on Valentine's, my true love gave to me - a tourist in a chocolate vat -"
Lindsay looks faintly disapproving. Danny, out all night on a death-by-stupidity in Ozone Park, cackles like a maniac. By the time she gets to shift twelve, they're up to "twelve murder suspects" and the rest of the lab is singing along, except for Lindsay, who glares and tries to look busy. Even Mac is humming along under his breath. Hawkes culminates the last "chocolate vat" by spinning Stella around the trace lab and they disperse, laughing.
2.
The first sign that something isn't quite right has to do with the flowers tucked discreetly into the corners of the lab. Most are chrysanthemums, garnished with scarlet roses, meaning whoever did the deed knew what they were doing. Hawkes shows up with three bags of chocolate hearts and hands them out to anyone who wanders by the office he shares with Lindsay. Danny and Flack exchange meaningful looks and somehow end up with a tub of chocolate body paint and two cans of whipped cream, both of which eventually end up in the lab refrigerator, right next to the Ozone Park vic's severed ear.
Near the end of the day, a dozen long-stemmed roses find their way across Stella's desk, along with a small blue box. She flips it open and smiles, and later that night she and Mac leave the lab together. They're not holding hands, but Stella shoves him into the passenger seat of the department vehicle she has checked out and drives him out of Manhattan into Queens. The streets they drive through get gradually dingier and dingier, but they get absolutely fabulous Greek food and even swing-dance a little, the steps coming back to Mac as Stella leads. It's a good night, and it gets even better when Mac lets Stella take him back to her apartment.
3.
Six years ago, Stella proposed to him on Valentine's Day. Four years ago, she died on September 11. Mac keeps pictures of her on his desk in the office and in his house, and on Valentine's Day he brings in two bouquets of roses and arranges them as best he can. Mac still wears his wedding and engagement rings (Stella always said traditions are for those with no imaginations); he keeps Stella's engagement ring in her jewelry box in his room. He can't forget her. Callie needs the memory of her mother.
On Valentine's Day, Danny's lecturing in Washington, something top-secret and government-related. Mac works his cases, smiles at his daughter's shaky paper hearts, and goes home. Astra's on a date with her boyfriend, and the house should seem empty. Callie curls up on the couch with a book, frowning at the tv, and Mac flips through his cold case files. The phone rings halfway through the 500m men's speedskate.
"Hey, lover," Danny purrs, and he must not be as busy in Washington as Mac thought.

Stella very much rocks, even when she's dead. Even Mac's looking up. I'm glad you like them!
