I have made my triumphant return to the United States! Mostly I want to turn around and go back to England, which I guess answers the question of whether or not I feel capable of going to grad school abroad. I shall settle for going home, though. Eventually. *eyes clock* I'm waiting for the eleven o'clock shuttle -- it's nine, now.
I've been offline the past couple days since we didn't have internet in Bath (lovely, wish there had been fewer people so I could have appreciated it without wanting to stab someone in the face and also more time so I could have actually looked around) and by the time I made it to
clanwilliam and
gmh's place yesterday the idea of excavating my laptop from my backpack was kind of horrifying. Yes, I said excavate: in an attempt to keep my suitcase from being overweight, I packed my heaviest items into my carry-ons. Well, I didn't get charged for an overweight bag, at least!
I did however pick up a cold -- the Plague had been going around my program for a couple of days, including all three of the people I was rooming with in Wessex, so I was pretty sure I was going to get it, I was just hoping it wouldn't be till after I got home. Instead I got it today, which, okay, flying with a cold = most painful experience on an airplane in my life, especially during descent. Way, way too much pressure, all building up IN MY FACE. It got a little better after I blew my nose, but still -- holy shit. Ow. The LHR-EWR flight was okay -- watched movies (I have finally seen Thor! I am not really that impressed!), ate, knitted, you know, but the EWR-SEA flight was much less fun. They did not show a movie, guys. It was a five or six hour flight and they DID NOT SHOW A MOVIE. I don't know when the last time that happened was. I was asleep on and off for most of it, more or less, since it was a redeye on London time, but it was full of screaming babies and crying children, and the guy who sat next to me kept putting his elbows in my space and climbing over me to get to the aisle (I always get an aisle seat if possible, I feel much less trapped that way) and adjusting my seat, so that was something I was less than enthusiastic about.
I had a much tighter connection in EWR than I'd counted on, because it's been a while since I've had a stopover after traveling internationally and it had completely slipped my mind that I'd have to go through Immigration and Customs before I got to SEA. So that was fun. (No problems -- I had to go through the agriculture inspection since I'd checked "yes" on the box about whether I'd been on a farm/ranch/pasture, since (a) we'd been test-pitting on a farm and (b) most of the heritage sites we visited had livestock grazing on them; I spent half my time in Wessex dodging sheep poop. But no trouble.) I beelined over to the other side of the terminal to the Jamba Juice, because JAMBA JUICE, I only get a couple times a year (if that), because there isn't a Jamba Juice in Ellensburg or New Orleans, and the only chance I have to get one is during my layovers in Denver or Houston, and that's if I get there during a reasonable hour. Now I am back in Sea-Tac, waiting for the shuttle to appear, and I am very sleepy because it may be almost ten pm PST, but in GMT it's six am...which is when I woke up this morning.
Urgh, I hope the shuttle comes soon so I can go to sleep on it.
