So I have finally hit the eps that I hadn't seen yet! And...I was going to do a link to my previous ep recaps, but I...can't find them? They're not tagged under either "BSG" or "television", anyway. I know I did them; I have them on my computer, and I remember replying to them! Did I only post them on LJ? Is that a possibility? Am going to check now.

Oh, I did. And never cross-posted. Why didn't they cross-post? Was that during the period when I wasn't cross-posting except manually? WEIRD. Um, anyway, my first set of ep reactions are here, about a page back since the new stuff crowded it out.

I started watching about a year and a half ago (looks like July 2009) and made it all the way up to 4.06, "Faith," but I only posted ep reactions up to 4.04, "Escape Velocity." For completeness' sake, I'm going to go ahead and put up the two ep reactions I wrote in July 2009 for 4.05 and 4.06 up here.

4.05: The Road Less Traveled

So, another bad day, I see.

Mathius! My favorite minor character! Damn, this is a bad season for minor characters so far, I see.

Have I mentioned how much I despise religious fanaticism? Yes.

I have the strong suspicion that this mutiny thing is not going to go down well.

Kara, that thing you have with Leoben is called fucking Stockholm Syndrome.

4.06: Faith

Well, that's one way to start the episode off with a bang. GAETA. (You know, shooting Gaeta is probably one of those things that should get Anders thrown in the brig, but no. NO. Because the Galactica crew has a very bad concept of justice.)

Alliance with the Cylons! Man, is that ever going to go over well with the Fleet, Adama, and Roslin. (Starbuck's reaction is probably not going to be as much, "Look what I brought home from school, Dad!" as it was in S1 when she hotwired the Cylon Raider. Alas. But, you know, when Starbuck takes a souvenir, she takes one hell of a souvenir.)

The Six who couldn't get over being killed. Oh, honey. I thought the other Six was going to snap her neck, but no, she shot her instead.

The Eights freak me out. I think they freak Sharon out too. And I like that she couldn't bring herself to comfort the dying Eight; Anders did that. (Anders, freaked out by his new knowledge.) One of these days, I would like to see Helo confronted by a room full of Eights, though I doubt we'll get it. (It reminds me of the scene in, I think, 3.03? Where Sharon and Anders meet and she says, "I've missed you," and he jokes, "Funny, I feel like I see you everywhere.")

The hybrid also freaks me out, while we're on the subject.

Kara, on the other hand, is clearly going out of her mind, on several levels. And she knows it.

Somehow I have the feeling that the Fleet isn't going to give a damn about allying with the Cylons; they'll just be too happy that the Cylons are destroying each other.

No, seriously, all the religious stuff annoys the hell out of me, and I know it's at least partially because I grew up on the Greek myths and they form the basis of my religious beliefs, so it ends up feeling a little like a personal attack, which I know it's not but it feels that way, God damn it. Ignore the hypocrisy in my cussing.

Oh, Helo, baby. I am still trying to figure out if he would have jumped if Starbuck hadn't brought her new friend home with her -- I think he might have; he's always been a good soldier. But the moment he got back to the Fleet and waved at Adama, he would have gone back for Sharon, I think. (No, seriously, where the hell is Hera?)

Apropos of nothing, I looked up "Agathon" on Wikipedia, because it sounded Greek, and it got me the name of an Athenian tragic poet and the phrase kalos kagathos, which means "handsome and brave", "handsome and good man", "war hero", or "martyr" -- the ideal man. (Not that the PTB thought about this at all.) Also, apparently, Agathon was a prince of Troy in the Iliad. (Randomly, Sharon V.1.0 is supposed to have come from Troy.)

Thrace is an area in southeast Europe. In the Iliad, the Thracians are allies of the Trojans and are supposed to be descended from Thrax, a descendant of Ares.

Valerii, Sharon V.1.0's surname, is from the Roman Valerius, a family name. Valerii is the male plural (ahahahahaha oh BSG).

I could keep going, but it gets a little repetitive after a while.

*

And here are my ep reactions for the ones that I watched today. This was very stressful! But on the bright side I finished up my Saroyan scarf, except for blocking. This batch contains my favorite line in the entire series so far: "Captain, you are not married to the entire production here."

4.07: "Guess What's Coming to Dinner?"

The title of this ep cracks me up.

Oh my gods, I am so creeped out. This is the first of the eps that I haven't seen before, and I came in minorly spoiled for some of the big things that happen during this season, but not the specifics, which in some ways is the best of both worlds. I lose some of the anxiety but keep enough of it that I'm on edge.

I'm not a huge fan of the Quorum scenes, but I like that we're finally getting another view of the Fleet besides just Galactica or Colonial One. It can be a little heavy-handed, like Lee exposition-ing his way through the feeling during the emergency jump -- would it have worked better if we'd been in the room with them, rather than just having him tell us? Would it have messed with the pacing of that scene (which was HEART IN MY THROAT, let me tell you that)? I'm not necessarily sure it would have, and I'm generally a fan of show rather than tell. But it's good we're finally getting another view of the Fleet, which I think is a theme they've been trying to carry on for about half a season now, if you work with the back half of S3 -- episodes like "Dirty Hands", "The Woman King", and "Crossroads" 1 and 2, to some extent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. ("The Woman King" weird, but on the other hand, HELO. Look, I have priorities.)

Should I talk about the plot? I'm not sure I can say anything much about the plot, since my train of thought is mostly, "OH MY GODS THIS WILL END SO BADLY SHARON HELO OH DEAR." (And Roslin and Leoben! And everyone else too, I guess. I don't know, for some reason I just got weirdly attached to Leoben.) Although...wasn't Hera just a baby not that long ago? I guess they do grow up fast.

Alessandro Juliani has such a great voice, I'm really surprised. I guess the singing might be corny, but -- it really works for me here. Also, jeez, the close-up on his eyes while the amputation was going on: MOST TERRIFYING THING. Oh, honey. And I liked that we could hear him singing in the background while Roslin was talking to Lee. And Anders, going quietly "ohgodsohgodsohgods" once he's realized what he's done.

SHARON. HONEY. And Tyrol trailing after her, because -- because in some ways he's still in love with Boomer, and Sharon's the closest he can get. AND HELO IS ON THE BASESTAR WITH ROSLIN AND BALTAR AND A REALLY WEIRDED OUT BUNCH OF PILOTS.

Ooooh, I suspect this will not end well. LET'S FIND OUT, SHALL WE?

4.08: "Sine Qua Non"

Oh, look. It's Cat Boy.

Man, I'm just never sure how I feel about Zarak. Sometimes he's kind of awesome! Sometimes he's kind of an ass! Sometimes he's kind of awful! I haven't decided which one yet, although, seriously, Adama, please learn how to talk to the Fleet, or at least deputize someone to do so.

Oh, Sharon, honey.

*flaily hands* I am super-impressed that they aren't actually showing us what's happening on the missing basestar. It works, you know? All we're getting is reaction shots from the Galactica freaking the fuck out. And then from the Fleet, freaking out because the Galactica has just up and vanished. (That shot with Lee and Lambkin, and the Galactica turning away? LOVE. Not entirely sure why -- maybe because it's not something we get very often.)

Racetrack gets to spacewalk! Awesome. <3 I love Racetrack and Skulls, lovely minor characters. Frankly I'm surprised that we haven't gotten more spacewalking before -- I guess Mathias right before she died? But as far as I can remember, that's about it. (You know, compared to Farscape, where we get it every other episode or so.)

Saul and Caprica Six are a little creepy sometimes.

Well, this is very dignified. Also, WHAT THE FRAK.

I am pretty sure I could have told you from the start that obviously they were going to make Lee president, but wait, was the cat dead all along? The cat clearly couldn't have been dead all along since it was alive last season! So was it just dead...during this episode? Was Lambkin hallucinating the cat? Also, does that gun have four barrels? That seems impractical. #schrodingerscat

Starbuck: less crazy these last few times around.

HIS NAME IS LELAND? LELAND? REALLY? LELAND? (Not that there is anything wrong with being named Leland! It is just...very surprising. I mean, there's nothing wrong with just "Lee" as a first name, you know.)

I really hope this isn't going to end in this disaster. Well, there are still another ten or so episodes to go, so probably not.

Sharon gets Hera back!

Adama. Waiting. With a book. I suspect that if the PTB knew they were going to do this, they might have given him a more dignified callsign, but on the other hand, continuity points for remembering that they gave him the callsign "Husker" in the miniseries.

4.09: "The Hub"

Oh! Now we get the backstory on what happened on the basestar. Excellent.

Wow, everyone's really calm while the baseship's jumping wildly.

*cackles* "Captain, you are not married to the entire production here." (Although I bet now he's wondering if he actually is.)

<-- Those reactions: while the ep was actually happening. Now, post-ep reactions.

There's something oddly beautiful and perfect about this episode. I can't put my finger exactly on why. For an episode with a giant space battle and the fate of an entire species at stake, it was...quiet. Almost calm. There were never really those bouts of frenetic energy that have come in previous eps -- "Guess What's Coming to Dinner?", for one, where you've got this rising tension in both the beginning and the end. This one was quiet. In a good way, mind. Maybe because it had two pretty tight POVs in the form of Roslin and Helo (Roslin major, Helo minor, I guess), with occasional slips in D'Anna and Baltar, but Roslin's...mmm, I wouldn't say at peace, necessarily, but she's getting there. And Helo's, like, the calmest person in the entire galaxy even while his world is breaking apart.

While we're on the subject! Let's talk about Helo! I love Helo! Kalos kagathos -- I guess the PTB were only subtle on the nomenclature here if you don't know ancient Greek, because Karl Agathon sounds just a bit like kalos kagathos. Well, sort of. If you're me, anyway. (Also, do you know that if you type kalos kagathos or kalos kai agathos (without the elision) into Google, the second thing that comes up is "kalos kai agathos tattoo"?) I was hoping we'd get to see him interact with an Eight that wasn't Athena, and yep, we get it! And it looks like it is breaking his brain, as might be expected -- especially since we got an Eight that decided to download Athena's memories. (Which, no, I'm with Helo: CREEPY. I've always been curious about how much Cylons of the same model have of the others' memories/feelings/emotions/etc., since sometimes they're a little unclear on it. Which Six was it on Caprica that was knocking Sharon around in S1? Why can't the Eights just hack into Sharon on Galactica and -- share consciousness, I guess? Because we seem to get some kind of shared consciousness under some circumstances -- when they're all voting, when they're turning back the heavy raiders on the algae planet, that sort of thing. Things about which I am curious. Maybe it's just distance, maybe they have to be linked into the system.)

Anyway, back to Helo. He follows orders -- except when he doesn't. This is one of the times when he does, anyway; gosh, look at his face when the Eight (does she have a name?) is talking about Athena, and how they're the same. I suspect that this did not go unnoticed by the pilots and co. And, oh, honey -- when he's looking at the dead Eight on the Resurrection Hub. (I suspect he is also thinking of the time he *shot his wife* and she came back. No second chances now.) (I really hope we get to see Helo interacting with Boomer sometime. I suspect it will end badly, but perhaps it will also be interesting?) (Actually, while I'm on the Helo and how he may or may not be worried he actually is married to the entire production line, I bet one of his sudden worries in the episode was, "What if I can't tell them apart from Sharon?" Because you see that chasing his way across his face, that one heartbeat when he relaxes his guard and the Eight comes over to -- be Sharon.)

D'Anna! Gods, Lucy Lawless, such a badass.

No Callum Keith Rennie in this ep, right? It's always a little lacking when you only have seven actors to play thousands of characters and you can't get a couple of them.

Heh, Baltar trying to convert the Centurion. Like I said, just a very calm episode over all -- even the parts that should be frenetic, like Roslin trying to save (or not save, then save again) Baltar. Also, Baltar and Roslin trying to talk to the Hybrid: excellent scene or excellent scene? Perhaps they do get along better when you lock them in a room togetehr with a crazy Cylon.

Aww, Roslin and Adama. They're very sweet.

4.10: Revelations

Well, that clearly did not end up like planned. Is this our future Earth or an Earth in the distant past? #somethingwonderedallalong Can't quite tell. It's sci-fi, it could go either way! Especially once you count in the fact that the last time the classical gods were worshipped was...quite a while ago. And I'm a classicist, I know the level classical tech was at.

So, what, they find Earth and Lee Adama jumps up on the table and starts stripping off his clothes since he doesn't have anyone to kiss? *snickers* Aww, Tyrol with baby Nicky. And Helo and Sharon and Hera smiling at each other. I was hoping for a dramatic reunion, but I guess it wasn't in the cards since the PTB's priorities are clearly elsewhere. Adamas, not agathos. (Sorry, I'm apparently going a bit overboard with the Greek today.)

I wonder if they ever let Caprica Six out of her cell? D'Anna's priorities: also apparently elsewhere. And was that actually Boomer manhandling the hostages towards execution, or was it just another Eight? Since last we saw Boomer was getting the hell off the Resurrection Ship after D'Anna killed Brother Cavill. Things about which I am curious!

Oh, honey, Kara's face when they she's told Anders and Tyrol are Cylons. Given her earlier comments, I had a serious fear going on that she'd pull out her gun and shoot Anders right there.

Adama completely breaking down after Tigh tells him he's a Cylon. :( And Lee stepping up -- wow, I really liked him in this ep; I was a little surprised by how much. He makes a good president, at least in this crisis situation.

Gaeta's such a trooper.

(Again with the lack of repercussions, though -- Anders never gets in trouble for shooting Gaeta, Sharon's let out of the brig after shooting Natalie Six -- possibly only because there was an urgent need for her, but I suspect it will be forgotten as well.)

Are there still other Cylons out there besides the ones with the Fleet, or did all the remaining basestars get destroyed along with the Resurrection Hub? What about the Cylon homeworld? I'm not sure we'll ever find out about the Cylon homeworld, but I'm curious.

Well, I must say I'm certainly interested to see where they go with this, since we've still got half a season left.
