Last night I was awakened from the drift of sooner-or-later sleep by the terrible thought, "What if the world ends and I have no toothpaste?"

So yeah. Sometime today I will be going out and buying a fresh tube of toothpaste, because I still have toothpaste left, but what if the world ends?

(Although yes. I did see that episode of BSG where Starbuck offers the last tube of toothpaste in the galaxy as a prize to whoever finds a habitable planet.)

That's not that crazy. I used to know a girl who claimed to have buried lighters in various places around our town, just in case a zombie apocalypse happened. We were never quite sure whether she intended to burn the zombies or herself, before they got to her.
Either way, she never said where, so she could have been lying, I guess, but she seemed very serious about it.
Compared to that, toothpaste is nothing. Clearly, you are not preparing sufficiently.

I only live in a dorm room! I have limited space for sufficient hoarding. Although, you know, I live in New Orleans; if I actually lived here year round I would have a hurrication disaster kit.

I like to keep a backup of the important things, so when my toothpaste runs out, I open the new tube and then put another on the shopping list to be purchased before the current one is half-empty. Same for shampoo and other things that won't expire before I go through the one before.

That is smart. I do that sometimes, but I'm concerned with getting myself off campus; if I run out of something, then, well, I better go get it now. *hands* There may or may not be logic there.
