1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
I went to England! All by myself! And saw Stonehenge and Sutton Hoo and all matter of archaeological marvels, and metaellairene and gmh and clanwilliam and burntcopper; it was awesome.
2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I can't remember what they were (and I think I tend more towards goals, anyway), so I doubt it? But probably.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My cousin Maya had her first baby, who I haven't met yet, but I have bought him a stuffed toy alligator.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
I don't think so, though apparently for a while there everyone thought my grandfather (the Japanese one) would, but he pulled through.
5. What countries did you visit?
The UK!
6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
A complete honors thesis. A college diploma. An acceptance to graduate school. Inner peace.
7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I'm bad with dates, but the day of the big earthquake in Japan -- I spent the day running around frantically, trying to get hold of my mother to try and get hold of my family in Japan, then trying to get my phone replaced when it started dying.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I went to England! By myself! And met people and did things!
9. What was your biggest failure?
I didn't do enough work on my thesis and I didn't apply to graduate school.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
No.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Hmm, in terms of things I've actually used? Probably my mixing bowls and biscuit cutters, which is awfully prosaic, but I use 'em all the time. Does my England trip count?
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Not mine. Except for the England thing.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Mine, on unfortunate occasion.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Most of my money comes from my grandparents, but I pay my own university tuition, and I paid to go to England...but if we're talking smaller things, a fuckton of books, somewhat less yarn.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Did I mention I went to England?
16. What song will always remind you of 2011?
I can't think of any song that's strongly associated with this year for me.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Sadder. I don't think I was as much a basketcase last year.
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner.
iii. richer or poorer? Probably about the same. Maybe poorer, since I've got less money in my bank account as I keep having to pay my tuition.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Working on my thesis. Writing.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Crying.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent Christmas at home with my parents.
21. How will you be spending New Year's?
Still at home with my parents!
22. Did you fall in love in 2011?
No.
23. How many one-night stands?
None.
24. What was your favorite TV program(s)?
Fringe, Castle, The Borgias, Game of Thrones...at least in the realm of "currently airing." Of things that are now defunct, BSG.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Crazy roommate Maryland, I guess? But I no longer have to live with her.
26. What was the best book you read?
I actually kept track of every book I read in 2011, so I can check this! But nothing really stands out to me as THE BEST. I really like Rosemary Sutcliff's The Shield Ring, I guess.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Mumford & Sons; I think it was the only album I bought this year. Oh, wait, I also bought some S.J. Tucker at the beginning of the year.
28. What did you want and get?
Friends in foreign places who are completely awesome people.
29. What did you want and not get?
Inner peace.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
HP7. Or maybe Captain America. I really don't see a lot of movies, so those might be the only options.
31. What did you do on your birthday?
Latin homework. Got pissed off at my roommates. Worst birthday ever.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Getting into graduate school. Or getting an A in Greek.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
A little dressier than before, a little bit vintage, a step up. I started wearing skirts and heels.
34. What kept you sane?
The internet. All y'all. Calling my mother. Though I'm not usually that certain I was that sane this year.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I try not to crush on celebrities or public figures.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
I hate goddamn politics and try to stay the hell away from anything that happened after the year 1600. That said, the repeal of DADT. (Did that happen this year?)
37. Who did you miss?
aellairene, after leaving England. My friends from ACE. (Although I'll note I didn't bother keeping up, but have I mention I hate Facebook like burning?)
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Our student liaison from ACE, Emily. EMILY COME BACK AND TAKE CARE OF ME.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:
Travel: you won't regret it. And living alone is really, really nice. Oh! And make sure you give your bread enough time to rise.
