I am back in New Orleans! It is a little shocking, if only because it was well below freezing in Washington when I left (and snowing, for a change; it barely snows all break and it starts dropping reasonably significant snow as I'm waiting for the airport shuttle, wtf, Washington), and when I got to New Orleans, the temperature was...72 F. (It is still 72 F. My brain is in shock. I hope the temperature drops, since I brought winter clothes with me.)

I am finally looking at my schedule, since classes start tomorrow and I thought it might be a good idea to, you know, know what classes I have, and I realized I have managed to arrange it so that I only have one class on Thursday, and that one from 3:30 to 6:00. NICE. (I suspect that this is the day I'll end up doing my public service.)

Am now going through adding textbooks to my Amazon wishlist, so I can find them as needed. Library's closed today, but I'll go and get some of them tomorrow and wait on the others.

...ooh! One of my textbooks is on the Battle of Lepanto! /nerd moment

Unrelated: I think that this year I would like to try and write an original novel. Barring The Novel I am co-writing with [personal profile] aella_irene, I haven't done this since high school. Granted, this would work better if I had anything besides those vague first lines about baking magic (uh, I suspect it might be a domestic fantasy), but why not?

It is good to know I am not the only person who loves the Battle of Lepanto.

'White founts falling in the Courts of the sun,
And the Soldan of Byzantium is smiling as they run'

Lepanto is one of the turning points of European civilisation, like Tours or Vienna; and redefined the balance of power in the Mediterranean; five years before, the Turks nearly took Malta - after Lepanto, that was unthinkable.
