*sideeye* Oh, right. The reason I don't usually read sci-fi is because every time I pick one up, it's all bitter angry dark cynicism right off the bat. (Because someone will ask: Cyteen, Cherryh. I'm now trying to figure out if I still want to go on.)

OTOH I finally have a plot bunny for an original! Which is sort of genderswapped Star Wars crossed over with Prison Break IN SPACE, so, uh, I fail at originality. I summed it up to [personal profile] aella_irene thusly:

Ke’ane Rako is Vira, a member of the galaxy’s elite warrior caste, trained from birth to be nothing less than a living weapon. When she wakes up as an inmate on the prison hulk Star of Sophos with no memory of how she got there, she knows that something has gone horribly, terribly wrong. Populated solely by the galaxy’s worst criminals, the starship has no bars, no locks, and no guards: it’s the worst possible place for a Vira to be. If she wants to have any chance of making it off the Star of Sophos before it reaches the penal planet, she has to find out how she came to be here. But in doing so, she may lose everything: her name, her rank, even her life.

Cyteen is one of my very favorite s-f books ever.

I've worn out two copies. But I am stupid in love with Ari II.

Yup, that's why I would have recommended the Chanur novels, which are … well, rather more lighthearted, if still complicated and with big stakes.

Cyteen resets me when I'm not-right.

New, somewhat less cynical, viewpoints do show up relatively shortly. There's a lot of very heavy stuff in there, but it's got enough basic hope-and-humans-rescuing-each-other that that outweighed the bitter/angry/dark/cynical for me.

If no one else has warned you, brace for sexual harassment and skeevy/assault. But despite that I still recommend.
