Don't ask me why it took me a season to warm up to her, and once the season was over, why I'm going after her. Don't think about it. It's easier that way.

Bozeman is a college town in Gallatin County, in southwestern Montana, with a population of roughly 30,000 (I don't know if this includes college students or not, since they tend to add significantly to the popuation of a town), which makes it rougly twice the size of Ellensburg. It's home to Montana State University and the Gallatin County Fair. Gallatin County also doesn't have that high a crime rate (according to the FBI), which sort of raises the question what exactly Lindsay was doing, especially since the number of murders stood at 0 in 2000.

I see Lindsay as coming from a mixed marriage -- her mother a professor at Montana State University, her father a Bozeman native and doing something much more down to earth. I'm actually assuming her mother came from New York -- Lindsay says she has an uncle there; it would explain a few things. Mrs./Dr. Monroe is probably a professor of something artsy -- I'm thinking either literature or music.

In "Mercury in Ascendant" I gave Lindsay four older brothers and made her the baby of the family, as well as the only girl. She had a much better relationship with her father than her mother, who disapproved of her tomboy-ness. Mr. Monroe spoiled her and spent a lot of time with her -- I don't think they were farmers, exactly, but they certainly had a few horses and a small herd of cattle. Lindsay was probably deeply involved in 4-H or FFA -- my money's on 4-H. She probably did a lot of rodeo (hey, while we're making her the token fish out of water, we might as well go the whole way). My Lindsay was a rodeo princess (Miss Rodeo Southwest Montana Princess) her senior year of high school, and possibly Miss Rodeo State Fair her freshman year of college (Montana Royalty).

After graduating from Bozeman High School (I'm thinking class of 1996), Lindsay probably went to Montana State University as a Range Science major. She kept riding rodeo, probably won a few more trophies, made Miss Rodeo State Fair her freshman year, and returned to MSU her sophomore year. And her sophomore year, her life fell apart.

CBS has never told us Lindsay's deep dark secret. In my universe, I'm thinking it's something that probably hit close to home but not her family. Her roommate, Katie, is brutally murdered and the Bozeman Police Department looks at Lindsay as a main suspect. Lindsay's life begins to fall apart as she looks for the killer on her own and the BPD look at her. I'm thinking the killer was probably a serial, and Lindsay was his final target. Lindsay, whose father taught her to shoot, starts carrying a gun, and when she's attacked, shoots and kills him.

Too haunted to stay at MSU, Lindsay transfers to the University of Montana-Missoula and changes her major to either Criminology or Forensic Anthropology, or possibly a double major in both. (I looked at forensic/criminal science -- the only school in the area, including Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and the Dakotas, that offers forensic science as a major is Seattle University in Seattle, Washington, and no way did she go there.) This is probably about the time she had the falling out with her family, who didn't think she knew what she was going into. She gets her B.S. and probably her M.S. from UMT, then goes back to Bozeman to work as a CSI there. How this is done when there is no crime has not yet been answered. Three years after that, she got picked up by Mac Taylor and left for New York.

Timeline working backwards:
2005 - hired by Mac Taylor, joins CSI:NY team
2002 - hired by Bozeman Police Department/Gallatin County Sheriff's Department
2002 - graduates from UMT w/ Master's
2000 - graduates from UMT w/ Bachelor's
1998 - transfers from MSU to UMT after her friend's mruder
1996 - graduates from Bozeman High School
1978 - born

Questions? Additions?

ETA: And by "1976" I totally mean "1978." I can so totally do math.

Maybe some of these (http://www.montana.edu/wwwmsupd/current.shtml)? I mean... I know they have their own university police, but they may use the County/area crimelab for things lik sex offenses and arson. (given the impressive number of them, maybe she has l33t arson skillz.)

Hmm. Yeah, that would make sense. I think the Crime Lab in Kittitas County is the Sheriff's Department Crime Lab or something and is used by all the local police departments; it would make sense if the Gallatin County Crime Lab was the same way. But didn't they say something about bear-maulings on the show? If I had time, I'd look into that right now, but I don't. Will tomorrow. (P.S. Do you remember where she said she worked? I think she said Bozeman County -- but there is no Bozeman County. Bozeman's in Gallatin County)

Wow. WOW. You really thought this through. CRAZY. And I'm really entertained by the rodeo bits, but you already know why ;).

I love how detailed this is, especially the last bit, about how she originally started out studying something so innocent and so her, and then changed and found a different calling after the murder.

I always go a little crazy near the end of the school year.

Seriously, I think this is all very likely, even now that we've found out her deep dark secret, because there's so much we don't know. I'm sure she was a science geek from the very beginning, though. (And trust me, I was highly amused when I started looking at majors.) She's totally the type to be driven, though.

It just makes me think, though... if CSI wasn't her first love, if she really longs to be back on a horse, back in the country, even as, at the same time, she longs to be in the big city where the memories of Montana can't haunt her, and where she can continue to solve crimes to make sure no one is wrongly accused (like she was, in your canon)

Lindsay can be very interesting. I just wish the show would give us a little more in terms of characterization, you know? Because she's too often just "the love interest" which is really a disservice to her.

...you know, I don't think her family was in the courtroom when she was testifying back in Montana, because I'm sure they would have stormed her and Danny. Huh.

I think I might like Lindsay more if they stopped showing her as this wussy emotional girl, and showed her as a strong female figure, like Stella.

Maybe she distanced herself from her family, because she saw how her friends' families were hurt when their daughters were murdered, and she can't stand to have parents still when her friends' parents no longer have children?

We've had hints of it, but they're not consistent. *sigh*

...that seems impractical. I'm just saying. It's more likely she had a falling out with her family of some kind, rather than just guilty conscious/survivor's guilt (which she has to have a bucketload of by now, since the finale).
