“Stop shouting,” a thick voice says from the bed. Mac and Stella both turn; Danny is struggling gamely up onto his elbow, face pale beneath the white of his bandage. “Thought I hallucinated your voice, Sheriff.”

“How are you doing, Danny?” Mac asks, giving Stella warning glare.

“Too doped up to tell,” Danny says, and forces a grin that reveals two missing teeth and the red lines Sonny Sassone’s knife must have left.

Stella leans past Mac to rest a hand on Danny’s shoulder. “You should go back to sleep, Danny.”

He takes a moment to reply. “You tryin’ to doctor the doctor, Stella?” His eyes are drifting shut; he reaches up to squeeze Stella’s hand but doesn’t quite make it. Mac glances away as her fingers cover Danny’s briefly. This isn’t his to witness; it’s private.

“How’s Linds?” Danny asks after a moment. His voice is thickening.

“She’s locked herself in her room with the knife Evan got her,” Stella says. She glances up at Mac. “Oh, yes. Did I mention? The girl you brought me is a complete sociopathic killer.”

“…really more of a psychopath…” Danny murmurs before he slips back into sleep.

“Killer?” Mac says.

“What do you think happened to Sassone?” Stella says. “Lindsay damn near cut his head off with a knife I didn’t even know she had. Evan and Aiden had to take him out of Caritas in pieces.” At Mac’s expression, she adds, “Oh, what are you going to do, Sheriff, arrest me? After what he did, you should be happy he got a burial. Sid was all set for a ritual burning. Went on about something the Druids did.” She unlocks the door and lets Mac out, then follows him into the hall and relocks the door.

“Stella, that would have been self-defense, you should have sent someone for Adam –”

“This is your town, Sheriff,” Stella says fiercely. “Not Adam’s. I don’t trust anyone but you and my people, and right now, I’m barely certain I trust you.”

THANK YOU!....*bounce bounce* I am so in love with this AU. I hope you will write more in this especially after that last line from Stella....I so want to know the background between these two in this reality. Thanks again you made my day as work is being a real pain in the ass.

I'd like to know the background too! They're not telling me anything at all. I have bits and pieces of the scene leading up to this scene; I might post them sometime, even though they're written in a completely different tense.
