bedlamsbard: natasha romanoff from the black widow prelude comic (nothing new history (girlyb_icons))
[personal profile] bedlamsbard
I don't really have a devoted year-end meme that I do every year, and since my main output is slow-moving chapter-by-chapter WIPs, most of the ones I've seen aren't exactly designed for me either.

"The midnight man" and "the sun king" are both self-contained future Dustverse concept fics, so I'm not really sure how much they count towards anything. "Fast is Falling", my NFE fic, is my one completed one-shot -- it's an OC-centric Warsverse story set between TSC and TLB at a women's college in the University of Beaversdam. I finished "Bad Moon Rising", which I started during my last few months of undergrad in 2012; it's a genderfuck gen fic set in the Oxygen & Rust 'verse.

I've got three ongoing WIPs -- "Dust in the Air", which has been on the books since 2008, and two Star Wars fics, "Bottom of the River" (another O&R lady!Obi-Wan story, and coincidentally, also my NaNovel) and "Wake the Storm", which is my first time writing the OT characters and using The Clone Wars canon, rather than comics canon.

I've got two fandoms I've been flipping back and forth between since 2007, both of which are on display here: Narnia and Star Wars. (Sure, I occasionally write in fandoms other than those two, but I think the only one I had an appreciable output in was BSG a few years ago.) I flipped back to Star Wars hard in September after I finished my dissertation and moved home, which I suspect is partially the result of being unable to stomach anything set pre-modern after spending a year doing just Rome and only Rome, and going to sci-fi instead.

This year I did NaNoWriMo for the first time since 2008, and won, although I ended up throwing out about 25-30K of what I'd written; River's actually a chapter back from where I finished on November 30 due to plot-wrangling.

Total fannish output in wordcount: 131,140.
Narnia: 55,890
Star Wars: 75,250

That makes it the second year in a row that Star Wars was my main fandom, rather than Narnia; the same was true last year. At this point I should probably stop calling Narnia my primary fandom and Star Wars my secondary fandom, because I...don't think that's true anymore. (What would it be like to have a new fandom? I have no idea, because I've literally been writing in these two fandoms since 2007.)

Oh, I guess I do have this fannish meme I did last year.

Your main fandom of the year? Star Wars. I wrote Narnia fic over a longer period of time, but more Star Wars fic, and definitely as far as consumption goes Star Wars probably beats every other fandom I've ever been in this year, between the movies and the TV show and the books and the comics.

Your favorite film you watched this year? Rise of the Guardians, which I haven't really talked about and which I didn't expect to like, but it does a surprising number of things for me.

Your favorite book read this year? Man, I read some fantastic books this year -- the Newsflesh trilogy by Mira Grant is probably at the top of the list, along with the Books of the Raksura by Martha Wells. For a single book, it would probably have to be Star Wars: Empire and Rebellion: Razor's Edge, by Martha Wells, which I've actually reread three times in the past two months. I reread books all the time, but not usually that frequently. Star Wars: Kenobi, by John Jackson Miller, would also make that last; I did a long review of that here.

Your favorite album or song to listen to this year? Probably Vienna Teng's Aims.

Your favorite tv show of the year? As far as new-to-me shows go, probably Orphan Black, Vikings, or Sons of Anarchy. For ongoing shows -- NCIS: LA, actually, because it delights me every week. Star Wars: The Clone Wars ended this year, but I'm kind of frustrated with some of the choices they made in S5.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year? The Star Wars comics universe, because oh man, what a delight. I don't know how much that counts as new, but previously I was only familiar with Star Wars: Republic. My favorite is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which is like the Farscape of the Star Wars universe.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? I'm really frustrated at some of the choices that SW:TCW made in season five, because I think they missed the opportunity to do something really interesting with Darth Maul's return. And the last few episodes of Vikings, which were just...I don't know what they were doing. Books -- The Given Sacrifice, because I'm just increasingly frustrated with this series.

Your fandom boyfriend of the year? By characters I have written, Anakin Skywalker; by characters I have read, probably Thomas Boniface from The Element of Fire, because apparently all I need in a fictional man is competence, badassery, devotion to a powerful woman, and to be beaten and chained up at least once. Or if we're sticking strictly to characters from fandom, Obi-Wan Kenobi, because I read some really great Obi-Wans this year.

Your fandom girlfriend of the year? Jarael from SW:KOTOR. JARAEL. What a character.

Your biggest squee moment of the year? Kensi and Deeks and their romance in NCIS:LA! It's probably the first time I've ever had the sense that the canon might ship something as intensely as I do, so I'm mostly sitting around praying that they don't fuck it up.

The most missed of your old fandoms? Uh, none of them? I do miss having that intense fannish devotion to Narnia that I got back into with Star Wars this year.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to? I meant to start watching Almost Human, but then I sort of didn't.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year? Uh, the episodes of SW:TCW season 6 that were produced and which Dave Filoni claims will be aired, I guess? I'm really interested to see what NCIS:LA does with Kensi and Deeks. And the return of spring shows like Orphan Black, Vikings, et al. There are some books coming out in 2014 that I'm looking forward to, but nothing that's making me bounce up and down on the edge of my seat in excitement. Uh, I guess The Hobbit: There and Back Again should probably be on this list, but I haven't even seen DOS yet.
