bedlamsbard: star wars rebels: hera with her arms folded, smiling (hera)
Here is the alternate POV version of the first scene from the bargains AU, plus another scene that follows it! This is actually the first version of the scene I wrote, following two scenes set earlier in the AU that are very fragmentary and so haven’t been posted. (Those are the scenes that give the concept its nickname, go figure.)

Please note that while I don’t typically warn, these scenes contain discussion of self-harm and suicide.

About 2.7K below the break.

“Blast.” Ahsoka sank down onto a bench and rubbed her hands over her face, her exhaustion from the day’s events finally catching up with her. They’d been lucky that Free Ryloth had been as close as it had, or Barriss would probably be dead right now.

That’s one asset blown, she thought with cold-blooded resignation that startled her when the rest of her mind caught up with the thought. It was better for the galaxy that there were two Inquisitors out of the Emperor’s hands – three, maybe, though she hadn’t been able to tell if the Hunter had survived or not. A lightsaber through the back was generally fatal, but with Force-users you could never be sure. She’d learned that lesson in the dying days of the Clone Wars.

Some scenes from the Bargains AU concept! I’ve been working on this on and off since July or so and it’s still very fragmentary, but these scenes are relatively complete (though were written in reverse order). The first scene I originally wrote as an Ahsoka POV, then rewrote it with a Hera POV a few months later; I’ll just post the Hera one now so that I can post the second scene along with it.

About 4K below the break; these are bargains AU concepts 9 and 4.

I should be flying right now! Hera thought, trying to fight down her irritation as she hurried down the corridor. She had gotten to fly more than this at the ISB Academy, where cadets were required to log flight hours in a variety of vehicles. After eight months with the Free Ryloth fleet, she could count on one hand the number of times she had been in a cockpit. The fleet had a limited number of starfighters, all of which were currently assigned to other pilots, with a waitlist that Hera hadn’t been able to even get on. She had finally managed to convince one of the squadron commanders to give her a trial and had been in the port hangar about to climb into a V-19 Torrent when her father had commed her.

Some concept writing! This is a continuation of the cage fight AU from some months back, with a time skip between that sequence and this one. Alas, no more actual cage fights.

Doriah woke instantly at the sound of the door sliding open, but the familiar sound of Xiaan’s footsteps followed immediately afterwards. He was already slipping back into sleep when she stopped by the side of the bed and said, “Hera’s gone.”

Doriah sat straight up. “What?”

Xiaan was dressed but looked tired, regarding him like she couldn’t quite decide whether or not it was worth panicking. “Hera’s gone,” she repeated. “She took Chopper and the Imperial shuttle and she left.”“When?” Doriah threw the blankets off and looked around for his clothes, which Xiaan dutifully handed him. “Where?

Some concept writing, something self-indulgent I’ve been working on to clear my head post-finals!  I started this scene last year for a different AU and have gone back to it a few times since, but this time it evolved into its own thing.  Like most of the others, this is a Devil’s Backbone AU with cadet!Hera and gunslinger!Kanan on Naboo.  As usual, please remember this is concept writing and not a polished, titled fic.

About 6.3K beneath the break.  (Also, sexytimes, if you wanted a warning for that.)

Hera was definitely having second thoughts about coming to Kanan’s fight, even though it had seemed like a good idea at the time.

The lower floor of the Spotted Shaak was hot and crowded with beings of what seemed like every species in the galaxy, most of them drunk or getting there.  Hera had spent her entire life in the company of either Twi’leks or humans – and never both at once – and while Twi’leks could certainly get rowdy on occasion, the last four years had been spent in the Imperial Academy, where such things were absolutely forbidden.  Hera was thinking longingly of the quiet of the Academy now, pressed against a suspiciously sticky wall in the big room and wishing that Kanan had chosen another way of making a living.

She hadn’t had to be here.  She could have said no when Kanan had offered and waited for him back in his room at the Poison Rose, boring as that might have been alone, or even stayed at the Academy for the night instead of taking the holiday off. Hera probably should have done the latter, since as careful as she was being, spending every free moment outside the Imperial Complex was starting to tell a little on her coursework.  She was still at the top of her class, there was no doubt about that, but it lacked the urgency she had felt before and she could feel herself slipping.

But she wanted to see Kanan, and a few extra late nights seemed worth that.

On the other hand, Hera still wasn’t certain that this was worth that, especially because she couldn’t even see Kanan: he had already gone off to join the other fighters in the locker rooms.

Here is the captured AU concept I’ve been snippeting for the past week-and-a-bit! This is a Devil’s Backbone AU that goes AU about five years before Backbone begins; this would be about a month after the Kanan flashbacks in Chapter 17 and six months before the Hera flashbacks in Chapter 20. (More or less; there’s some wiggle room in that time span.)

This is actually less sketchy than a lot of my early concepts, which on some level I’m fascinated by. I usually don’t do much editing on concept writing, but there was definitely some here. (For the curious, the only one of these scenes written after Monday’s episodes is the last scene.)

About 6.7K below the break.

Ahsoka had expected to sense the Inquisitor’s presence as soon as she came out of hyperspace, but instead all she felt was unease – which, she realized after a moment of concentration, seemed to be coming from the crew of Phoenix Home. She couldn’t blame them for that, she supposed.

She didn’t need the Force to tell how uncertain Commander Sato was about the situation. He came down to the already-crowded hangar deck to greet her after she had landed her A-wing, saying, “I am glad you were able to come so quickly.”

“When there’s an Inquisitor involved, everything else can wait,” Ahsoka said. “Has he tried anything? Said anything?”

“Neither.” Sato’s frown deepened. “He did not even ask where he was.”

“Well, it’s not like he could mistake this for an Imperial ship,” Ahsoka pointed out gently. “Take me to him. Let’s get this over with.”

The converted medical frigate didn’t have much in the way of a brig, but it did have a single cell originally meant for quarantine purposes; its door was sealed and a pair of sailors were standing outside it, armed and radiating discomfort. One of them passed Ahsoka a small control, explaining, “He’s in shock cuffs.”

It has been well over a year and I finally finished writing this. I’m really sorry, guys, I have no idea why it took so long. Here is how Dark Bishop and Knightfall, the second two books in the theoretical Gambitverse trilogy, would have gone.

*

Queen’s Gambit is structured somewhat oddly because it was written and plotted to fill two distinct and contradictory positions: the second book in one trilogy (the Ouroboros series) and the first book in another trilogy (the theoretical Gambitverse series). The universe in the Gambitverse existed before the Wake characters arrived; it will continue to exist now that they’ve gone. The story hasn’t concluded, and for that reason there are a number of plot threads that weren’t tied up or that were introduced near the end of Gambit, because they were intended to lead into the second and third books.

I promised that when Gambit had finished I would write up the events that I knew of in the second and third books -- Dark Bishop and Knightfall, respectively. There’s a good chance that this says more about the way that I plot and write than it does about what was actually intended to occur in the remainder of the trilogy; I usually write to and around what I call “keystone scenes” -- flashes of visuals or, occasionally, dialogue that stand out for me. They don’t always end up in the story in its final form, but using them is often what I’m structuring the plot around. I didn’t do extensive plot work on Dark Bishop and Knightfall since I knew I wasn’t going to be writing either one, but I do know a handful of the keystone scenes and plot threads in each one.

Queen’s Gambit opens with Queen Amidala essentially occupying Count Dooku’s canonical position as head of the Confederacy; it ends with her in Leia’s position at the end of A New Hope: as a queen in exile (though still head of the Confederacy, at least in name). In some ways Gambit was supposed to be kind of a fakeout; the basic set-up implies that it’s going to be a take-off of the PT/TCW, but the bait and switch at the end -- the introduction of Palpatine’s New Galactic Empire -- is to actually set it up as a mirror to the OT, a thread meant to be carried through the second and third books. Exact parallel? By no means. But it was something I was thinking about.
