On the subject of Deathly Hallows, all I have to say is:

Squeak!

and that I will have to think about it, except for the ending, which I hated a whole lot on general principle, because I hate "[insert number of years] later" epilogues. Especially since apparently the first thing everyone did after defeating Voldemort was get married and make babies. ARGH. ARGH ARGH ARGH. And, frankly, the multitude of new names was the most confusing thing ever. (And I can't believe Harry named his kids James, Lily, and Albus Severus. WHAT ABOUT SIRIUS, OH MY GOD.)

Also, some of this stuff really should have been inserted into earlier books. If I was JKR, I'd, like, want to rewrite the entire series right now.

Also, McGonagall is WIN. So is Percy. Kid James and Sirius forever, hurrah! And Ron and Hermione! Now that's the best played romance I've read anywhere, I swear to God.

Fandom totally called it, by the way. *waggles eyebrows*

Dude, I totally called it on one of the twins kicking it.

Also, I note that Molly Weasley is the first (and only) one to really swear in all seven books, and it's at Bellatrix Lestrange. AWESOME.

Draco...could have had more to do. Especially with the "Draco Malfoy is the true holder of the Elder Wand" shit; it felt glossed over and thrown in. I would like a little bit of heroism, please. Or even true villainy.

Dude, Crabbe and Goyle had lines.

I feel that Rowling went through the previous six books going, "Okay, what have I briefly mentioned before and how can I make it show up again?"

I want an icon with graffiti "Dumbledore's Army. Still recruiting." on it. For some reason, that got to me.

Coming home is weird. Man, I'd like to go to college now; I don't know if I can put up with my parents for another year. At the risk of sounding mean, half the reason I did the program was to get away from home, because I spend a lot of time in the house and so much of it is with my parents that it gets...stifling. And claustrophobic. And now I'm back home, and I'm so used to the freedom of Brown and Providence that it's really claustrophobic. New plan: go to college somewhere decent-sized. (By the way, the pile of college stuff I got over the course of four weeks is Really Thick.) Also, reconsidering the Ivy League, because I did, in the end, like Brown.

I miss the freedom of Brown. I even miss the people, because it is very comforting to always have people around, even for a loner like me. I miss Providence, and the weather in Rhode Island. Well, not the rain. *sigh*

Also, I watched the 2004 version of Return of the Jedi, and had one, "Dude, what the fuck is this shit?" moment, but followed that up with Revenge of the Sith -- look, I was packing, it was background noise that I turned around and watched a lot -- and am this close to going on a hardcore Star Wars kick. Which, okay, I was on before I watched the endpieces of both trilogies, but I'm talking hardcore here, guys.

Must finish revising the [livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon story first, though. *beckons* Bring it on, Calypso. Do your best.

I think I need an HP icon for the occasion. *goes to search*

Not true!

Albus Severus (and omg, okay, I totally felt my heart break at that name, because AWWWW) is 11. The prologue is 19 Years Later. Harry and Ginny were totally not having baby-making fiestas right after the war. They probably rebuilt, finished school, helped to make the work livable again, and THEN had madhot sex.

Also, re: college: I know the feeling. But you start applying in two or three months, and then senior year will fly by, and before you know it you'll be GLORIOUSLY FREE.

I have to figure out WHERE to apply to, because nearly all my choices are reach schools except the UW, and I hate hate hate Seattle with the burning passion of a thousand fiery suns. Which Seattle has none of. Ever. Despite what my parents say.

Seattle is actually one of the places that I'm considering moving when I get out of school... I know there's no such thing as a sun there, but it's on the water (bonus), has decent temperatures year round (double bonus), and is a big enough city to keep me content.

Make a list of every school you want, and the list things that are important to you, be that tuition, location, city size, campus size, programs offered, etc, and start eliminating from there.

It doesn't actually rain as much as they say, either. Apparently. *rolls eyes* It just. Doesn't do anything for me except make me hate it. I'd much rather go back east.

...work? *sigh* Yes, yes, I know.

I'd much rather live in NYC or somewhere thereabouts, but I think Seattle and San Francisco are my next choices.

It's not difficult work, though!

San Fran. Also horrible weather. Clearly, I know how to pick 'em. Stanford's nice all year 'round. *happy sigh*

Well, I've more or less figured out what schools I'll apply to, but the problem is most of the schools are schools I'd have to fight my way into kicking and screaming, so I have to find at least a couple schools I'm really likely to get into, so if all the others turn me down I can go somewhere besides the UW.

Yeah, but I can't go anywhere too hot, because I'll die, and the same with anywhere too cold. Plus, everywhere has terrible weather, when you think about it. The entire mid-west has tornadoes. Northwest is rain, southwest is nasty heat and humidy, southeast is hurricanes and northeast is blizzards.

Well, yes, but I'd rather have a season of horrible weather that I can just spend indoors than a year full of drizzly weather. Nowhere is perfect. *shrug*

Yep, too true. I've never lived in NYC, Seattle, or SanFran, though I've visited two of the three, but I think I'd be happy in any of them.

I've visited three of the three, and I think I could handle it, but I don't particularly want to. I liked Providence, though; it's not helping with the whole "narrowing down colleges" thing, at least location-wise, because I'm suddenly leaning away from small college towns.

Having the freedom to go out and do things means you want things to do, I found. Iowa City was 60,000 people, and 25,000 of those were students/staff at the university, so I found myself going crazy on vacations when I didn't go home. Big cities, though, are so much better, because there's things to do, concerts and plays and events.

Well, James is at least twelve, because he's been at Hogwarts for at least a year, although I actually want to say he's going into third year because of JKR's prediliction for two years between siblings (and Lily is two years younger than Albus). And Bill and Fleur had babies pretty soon after the war, because of Victoire Weasley snogging Teddy Lupin; not too much of an age difference. On the other hand, one assumes Harry had to raise Ted Lupin because of the godfather thing, but then there are lines like "Teddy would really be part of the family then!" and "Why don't you just invite him to live with us and have done with it?" which seems to say that someone other than Harry did -- Andromeda Tonks, maybe? Her husband died, but maybe she didn't?

Also, like, everyone has kids: Harry and Ginny, Ron and Hermione, Draco, Percy, and that's just who we know about. Plus Lupin, obviously.

Also, what the hell does Harry do for a living? After that comment in the OotP movie I had him pinned for a teacher, but apparently not. Maybe he plays Quidditch professionally; I can't see him ever working for the MoM.

Hey, hey, but look at RL, right? After WWII, everyone just started popping out babies. It's the post-war thing. You have sex to celebrate, and nine months later you really regret that sex. ;)

I have a feeling Harry probably doesn't work. Or, if he does, it's something small, quiet. Maybe he runs a Quidditch store or something. But I can't see him playing, because he detests the spotlight, and I can't see him doing anything that would require him to use his fame as The Man Who Killed Voldemort.

Well, yes, I just wish Rowling hadn't put it in, because it very nearly ruins the book for me. HATE "happily ever after" epilogues. And she should have realized she'd be swarmed by fans dying to know about the adventures of the Trio's kids. *rolls eyes*

I can see him teaching, but that's about it. Have you read Drop Dead Gorgeous, by [livejournal.com profile] mistful? He's a hardassed, really screwed up Auror there, and it works, in its own peculiar way, but I can't see canon Harry ever working for the Ministry. He'd play Quidditch just because he loves it, though, not for the fame.

Yeah, I agree. There could have been other ways to resolve the way the book ended, but this does give the seven books a resolution that she couldn't have managed any other way. And we all know that she's done with the HP books, she's said that, except for maybe another charity book.

Yeah, maybe he teaches (though not at Hogwarts, since he talks about Al saying hi to Neville, and how they'll write three times a week, but maybe at another school?). I haven't read that fic... what's the pairing?

He might play Quidditch, but I don't think he'd play for England or whatever.

IT'S OVER. OH MY GOD.

*cough*

I think it was extremely unnecessary, and I am highly displeased. As a ficcer. As a fan...still unfond of it on principle, and because it confused the hell out of me with the dearth of new names.

It's H/D, but hasn't gotten there yet. Would you like a link?

It still hasn't fully sunk in that it's totally over. I can't picture life without another HP book in a couple of years, and that kinda scares me.

I found the link, actually. Damn, this thing is massive! I don't usually read H/D, but I'll probably read it until the DH fic starts to appear.

It's not...that big yet? [livejournal.com profile] mistful also wrote "Quality of Mercy", which is post-HBP, and the lovely "Underwater Light", post-GoF. However, they are all really excellent fics. (And I hold out that QoM is better than DH. God, I'm cynical. This is new even for me.)
