I cannot fall into the story because I am thinking about all the other stories

Am currently reading Lev Grossman's novel The Magicians, which can sort of be summed up by describing it as "Harry Potter if Harry Potter was American and Hogwarts was a university but really more like a high school, and also if Narnia was less SRS BZNS and more obsessed with clocks and there were five Pevensies and Peter ran away and vanished into Narnia," which is also how it was publicized last year.

I am currently halfway through it, and my main thought is, "Dude, you could have just written fic like the rest of us."

On finishing The Magicians, my thoughts are mainly along the lines of, "What the fucking fuck?"

Gods, I'm offended as a fantasy fan, I'm offended as a Narnia fan, I'm offended on C.S. Lewis's deceased behalf, and I want to kill things.

Scathing review and vague meta to follow later.

I am still putting my thoughts together before I start writing up a review post for The Magicians -- and while I don't usually review books, this one I really have to because it hits close to home -- I do have to say that the rage cherry on top of the insult sundae is ( cut for spoilers )

Note to self: Post from last year on an interview with Grossman. *rereads* Oh, gods, I didn't know he was writing a sequel. THAT IS REALLY NOT NECESSARY.

I keep trying to put The Magicians out of my head, and each time I do, I think of something else in it that offends me! Some of it stuff that I don't usually notice (including privilege, race, class, and gender. That on top of the HP and Narnia issues + interaction with source texts is giving me a huge pile of things to talk about)! Seriously, I don't know whether to be impressed with Grossman or what.

I still have not decided what to do with Dust 20 (a.k.a. gangs of Cair Paravel), despite having had a second pair of eyes on it. The thing is that if this wasn't fic, I wouldn't hesitate at all to put it in, but it is fic, and I have a loose enough grasp on canon as it is. Do I really want to add more to it? But it might be necessary, and I like the contrast in setting between Dust 19 and the streets of Cair Paravel and Dust 21 and the coming chapters. Agh, don't know, don't know. I don't even know if I should finish it or just write the next chapter and think about it later!
