bedlamsbard: natasha romanoff from the black widow prelude comic (warrior (illuxtris))

So I finished reading Beowulf and now I kind of want to write Narnian epic poetry. You know, the kind that goes, Peter, Summer's King, High King of Narnia / who brought spring to Narnia / in the days of long winter / rode from his great castle / Cair Paravel by the sea / the white city, with his sword / lion-headed Rhindon, bound in gold / and magic, gifted by Father / Christmas when Peter and his kin / came to Narnia as children / answering the country's call for / salvation from the White Witch / Jadis, who called herself / Empress and Queen of fair Narnia / locked in eternal winter until / Peter, Summer's King, brought spring / and victory.

Except. I think I'd kind of end up wanting to hurt something after about a page of that.

I wouldn't want to hurt you for it, but only because I wouldn't read it!!!

What, not even the bit that would go,

...Edmund called Silvertongue
lost at sea on foreign shores
or so word came to Cair Paravel
from a man Peter trusted.
But on the heels of this word
a wolf came to the white city
blood-jawed, grey-furred, like unto
Maugrim, White Witch's vassal,
and he spoke to Peter, "Son
of Adam, your brother, black-haired
Edmund, is in the keeping of
my master, who followed Jadis before
she was slain. His death will be
weregild for our hallowed dead,
save in exchange for your life,
which is rightfully ours. So
we offer you a choice: his
traitor's lifeblood, or yours."

*pets* But of course.

...raven-browed Edmund spoke through
blood-spattered lips, "Hear me, son of stone:
I tell you now, you have nought but
to wait some little while longer;
my brother draws near. He dismounts his horse.
He draws his blade, lion-hilted
Rhindon, forged of starsteel and magecraft,
the wolves' bane. Do you doubt my word?
He is at the door. He is here."

With a great crash of breaking wood,
the King of Summer entered, lion-headed
Rhindon bright in his armored fist,
his foes' blood already dark on
his mail. "Threaten the brother
of my house?" he said, in a voice
like thunder, the voice heard
by fleet-sailed Masongnong when
their ships were razed from the water.
"You dare to threaten Narnia?"

If I *had* read this-which I didn't *coughs*-I'd say "at least Peter griped about them threatening Edmund *first*."

Er, Peter means stone, I think, so the "son of stone" makes me think of him, and not whoever you're meaning to refer to.

Oh, my eyes, my EYES!!! *flees, aka goes to have dinner*

And for kicks, remember this is a Telmarine translation of a piece of Narnian literature that has huge portions of the story that have been burnt away due to a fire.

I was thinking trolls? And Peter probably wouldn't mean "stone" in Telmarine, but then again...

...[Rhin]don cut through
the bonds that bound Edmund and
Peter put his shoulder under his
silver-tongued brother's. "Lean on me,"
said the King of Summer, and together
they went out, Silvertongue and
Bittersteel, those crowned kings,
those wise minds, long vanished
into the west, lost and diminished.
But they were not yet gone, gold-
crowned Peter and raven-browed
Edmund, and they rode to Cair
Paravel still rank with the blood
of their foes.

*stares enrapturedly*

Have you read the Song of Roland? This reminds me of the Song considerably more than it does of Beowulf. *Scratches nose* When I'm reading the Song lately I wind up thinking of Peter and Edmund in place of Roland and Olivier, and it's your Peter. Which makes me sad, because Roland is a big knightly puppy, and not nearly as screwed up as your Peter. BUT ANYWAY. YEAH. What Lassiter said about OF- definitely. EARLY Old French, eg the Chanson de Roland, would suit your Narnia just nicely.

ahah well, you're a darn sight more rigourous in your world-building than most, so that'll make up for it ;)

Insert obligatory medievalist flailings of the OMG ROLAND type here. If you're ever at a loose end, see if you can grab the Penguin and read the first half. The second half, once Roland is dead, is not NEAR as much fun, although interesting to study. The first is all SHINY SHINY PEOPLE bashing each other with swords.

What it's doing to ME is ruining my ability to appreciate fantasy literature. I was reading Tamora Pierce and appreciating the fact that Kel's world is so much better structured than Alanna's, and then I was all "HEY! They have a standing army AND two standing auxilliary forces AND they're paying the knighthood out of the crown purse. WTF? They've had years of war and famine, their economy can't support that!"

Tortall must be either the most densely populated medieval kingdom EVER (possible- there's certainly tons of refugees), or it's ridiculously top-heavy. FAR TOO MANY NOBLES.

Also this is what fanfic is doing to me: making me derail my supervisor for twenty minutes and getting him talking about medieval diet JUST so that I can find out what to feed them on board the Dawn Treader. Mind you I found out way more than that and I mustn't forget to write up the Very Picky Fanficcer's Guide To Medieval Catering...

Someone in Ottawa wrote their entire NaNo novel last year in epic poetry form. It was seriously awesome to behold.

Excellent, then I can just say, "A large portion of The Lay of the High King was lost in a fire at the manor in Lantern Waste; the sole surviving copy of The Lay was on loan to Lord Parasor from King Caspian II at the time. Bits and pieces of it remain, enough that modern scholars can puzzle out the story, though the true beauty of The Lay, one of only three surviving pieces of Narnian epic poetry, has been lost, due both to the damage and the translation."

Rather than, you know, writing sixty pages of how Peter went single-handedly into the wolves' den and rescued Edmund, or something.

It would be totally awesome if you did it, because Beowulf is totally awesome and yeah... You could probably do a lot of fun stuff with it. But then, the hurting something tends doesn't sound so good :p

I might do parts of it, and then the criticism/historical analysis, because apparently, the combination of college and Narnia makes me want to do crazy stuff like that.
