bedlamsbard: natasha romanoff from the black widow prelude comic (hell of a good universe (girlyb_icons))

Trust me to write a scene that involves me Wikipedia-ing various types of hawks, eagles, and falcons in order to accurately write descriptions of hippogriffs. I am terrified of birds. (Although. Actually. To be honest, I am not as afraid of birds of prey as I am of, say, sparrows. GOD I KNOW I AM SO WEIRD.)

What, didn't y'all know that Narnia had hippogriffs? Of course Narnia has hippogriffs. I have no idea why I didn't think of this before. HIPPOGRIFFS. Oh my God. Totally just as cool as griffins. Maybe not as sexy.

I am so hyped up to be back at Dust, you have no idea. Water is cool, but whatever, Dust is where it's at. And there has barely been any Peter! I am happy like whoa. (Not because of the no Peter thing. Because I love all these characters. And this 'verse. And this entire friggin' story. This will probably fade quickly, but what the hell, must use it while it lasts. AND DUST OHMYGOD.)

Water is a sprint; I know where it's going and how quickly it's going to get there. (Well, it's PC. We all know what it's doing.) Even with three parts, it's still rather a sprint, because the main action gets over with fairly quickly, relatively speaking.

Dust, now -- Dust is a marathon. An awesome marathon. I know where it's going and roughly how quickly it's going to get there. (Read: not quickly. MARATHON. Dust is the Greco-Persian Wars of Narnia, kids! Complete with a Thermopylae and a Salamis. A Marathon and a Plataea, too. But what am I saying, we're not there yet.) And Dust is -- oh my god. *flails wildly* I forgot how much I loved this story! Oh my god! It is just so...well. I don't want to say epic, but, well. It is. It is not crack.

Also, it just hit 30K.

*flails some more*

You are not weird for your sparrow-fear! I have a friend exactly the same way - he is terrified of birds but especially the small ones and their quick darting movements.

Although I will also add that the birds that scare me the most are friggin' peacocks. I hate peacocks and they're terrifying.

I hear they're downright mean. There used to be two of them on the little farm not a mile from my house, and they let them wander out into the road sometimes. Also crowds of ducks: that is a totally legit fear. they will bite you if you are handing out bread or whatever.

oh, christ, don't talk about research, I still haven't done my norman/plantagenet era law research for at least one chapter. maybe I can do it while lj is down this evening...

mind you, I did do a quick bit of creatures research - apparently in the greek era, satyrs and fauns were completely different - Satyrs were middle-aged, perpetually horny and had human feet, fauns had goats feet and less of a sex drive) it's only the romans who started confusing the issue. So weta were *right* in making them different, even if they made satyrs completely different to the greek definition.

still trying to figure out where the 'so, er, we've heard rumours your brother's into bestiality' conversation should go. corner of court? (ie, relatively public) or in private? Er....

Oh my God, don't even talk to me about creature research. Considering that I basically bounce through Wikipedia going, "That looks interesting! I should put that in Narnia!" and therefore have nonhumans from everywhere -- and then I forget who they are, and what type of Narnian they are -- dryland, flesh-and-bone, saltwater, freshwater, etc. -- and whether or not they're still around in PC or Dust. *beats head into desk*

...Peter's declaration that he's up and going to Cair Paravel was supposed to come in this chapter, but I can't see how that will make it here, what with the Susan and Edmund AWESOME that took over... (Susan is making stupid decisions because she wants to prove herself to her siblings, Edmund is making stupid decisisions because he's really pissed at Susan and it's affecting his judgment.)

I only bloody wish I would remember to expand the creatures list in there - aside from all the greek/mediterranean ones Clive inserted originally, I have so far managed to insert a selkie. one. Sodding. Selkie. (my brain still gets stuck on 'british landscape' so I'm going for british ones, we've got enough of 'em... :sigh:)

:snicker: oh, I'm just going to point and laugh here. And so glad my Pevensies are mostly reasonable little fuckers. But really wish this nano wasn't so much inside people's heads. :kicks it: I want last year's action-fest back!

Hey, at least you don't have to figure why they have or have not shown up in LWW and PC onscreen. (Some of these I can handwave. Some of these I cannot, like all the folk who show up in "The Bone's Prayer." And then I have to figure out what's going on in Dust, and then, just for kicks, I have to figure out what's going on in Water, which I'm trying to keep from following my PC stories.)

I love writing action. The action scenes in Dust go fast, the action scenes in Water go fast, although not that fast because in Water it's from Caspian's POV and he occasionally goes, "OH MY GOD I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON WHERE IS MY GIRLFRIEND?" And there is some excellent action in Dust 5, and plot. Also Susan and Edmund being entirely unreasonable. When Peter is the calm, sane, reasoned one, then you know you have a problem; Peter is still back at, "Maybe if I ignore it, they will work it out themselves," which leads to Edmund with his hands around Susan's throat and Susan with a knife at Edmund's balls.

As compared to this scene in Water:
“I’d better get going,” Susan says, slipping off the edge of the Stone Table. “It’s still early, and I want as much as daylight as I can get.” She moves to kiss Peta on the cheek, and Peta turns her head to kiss her sister on the mouth.

Caspian stares as one of Susan’s hands comes up to thread through Peta’s hair, then she pulls away, smiling a little sadly. “I’ll take that as ‘good luck’,” she says, and reaches past Peta to pick up her bow.

“Take it as ‘don’t get caught and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do’,” Peta says.

Susan laughs. “Well, then,” she says. “That doesn’t narrow down the options much, does it? I’ll see you.”

I wonder how long I'll be able to keep labeling Dust as gen. *eyes ceiling*

there are at least a couple of parts in my calormen fic where people are going to wonder, "uh... are they, like, having sex?" and i will not specify! i will just continue to describe what they are doing on that bed in this (not so) vague way!:

“Edmund,” Susan breathes. “O my brother, what have you done to me?”

“Don’t you trust me, Su? I thought we’re to trust each other, you and I.”

Her skin is raw and sensitive with magic; he can tell from the way she mewls at every brush of the sheets on her skin and how she curves into his caresses. Her eyes are unfocused and her breathing unsteady. Edmund kisses her face and she lets herself be lulled by it, kisses him back and her warm hands cup his face, slide down his neck and turn into fists clutching his shirt. His sister unfurls in his arms, and he exerts only the gentlest pressure in holding her still, holding her close. Edmund makes no unexpected movements and speaks very slow, very soft, the way one would to a dangerous animal caught in a trap. There is nothing to fear, he is telling her. More importantly, there is nothing to fight.

uhhhhhhhhh okay so out of context it sounds like edmund is date-raping his sister. (maybe IN context it sounds like he is date-raping his sister too, who knows with me. god, self.)
THIS FIC IS SO CLOSE TO DONE I CAN ALMOST TASTE IT kfs;l'

GUH.

also, that is far less vague than the Peta/Susan kissing up above, and definitely less vague than the Peter/Susan, Susan/Edmund, Peter/Edmund, and Peter/Susan/Edmund in this chapter.

WHEN IT IS DONE IF YOU NEED A BETA YOU KNOW WHERE TO COME. i'm just sayin' here.

indeed i will crash upon your shores like a wave upon a sand, fic in hand to seek your wise counsel!

it is like, how much can i talk about them groping each other and still not have it be sex or explicit hanky panky. i mean, okay, so there is a little explicit hanky panky, but like... up to what point can i have it be explicit and still not have it be incest?

oh the questions that keep me up at night!

that is my question exactly! i mean, when do i have to change dust from "gen" to "implied het, slash, threesome, incest, canon character/oc, human/nonhuman, dubcon, underage, and WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE"?

i mean, hello, peter and susan sharing a bed and stuff like And as for Peter – well, she won’t give her brother too much credit for remembering her clothes, but maybe Peter will remember this dress too, and susan being all, "OH EDMUND PETER MIGHT BE ANNOYED WITH ME IF YOU HAVE NO BALLS," and also, She knows his body well enough that she doesn’t have to wonder what he’d feel like against her, because she knows from two worlds, two – three – timelines.

gen. honestly, i swear it is GEN.

AHAHA. for serious! my header is going to be like, "edmund/jadis-ish, edmund/susan-ish, & edmund/oc-ish. but technically it is gen. warning: sort of incestuous overtones." that should cover it. i mean, in that excerpt above, probably he's just snuggling with her because she's spazzing out from magic!

but of course! and they're pevensies, they're all sort of incestuous anyway.

(of course, you see what happens with this mindset: it spills over into my mental plotting for the werewolf story, and suddenly nathan isn't just having sex with sebastian, he's also sleeping with his three siblings and possibly the other members of his pack, occasionally.

(this is what i come down to. incestuous werewolves. ohmygod.)
