You know, I swear I used to have the ability to write academic papers. Really, I did. Why was I so much better at this in high school? (It would probably also help if any of the writing I did in high school -- "this is how you will have to write papers in college! Pull in outside sources!" -- was the type of writing I was doing in college, but no. No, Tulane has to be contrary. Or I'm just bad at choosing classes.)
This is coming off a pair of B's on papers in two different classes (Literary Investigations, where I just got a straight-up B, and The Ancient Novel, where I got an 89. GIVE ME THE ONE EXTRA POINT). I just...I feel like this was so much easier in high school.
Anyway, sort of on that note, in the sense that perhaps this will help my work ethic, do any of y'all have good blog recs? I know you medievalist people do. *puppy dog eyes* Fun, informative, completely in love with the subject matter but doesn't concentrate on it all the time?
The only non-fannish blog I read is Crazy Aunt Purl, which is occasionally a knitting blog.

Date: 2009-03-07 06:35 am (UTC)This first one I found through Neil Gaiman's blog so I'll just block quote:
It's a blog of essays and pictures of things I either know a bit about and wish I knew more, or about things I know nothing about and really really needed to. Everything from Ossuaries to astrolabes, automata, orreries and shadow-puppets, and even short films of stop motion beetles...

Next up for sheer screaming hilarity is Cake Wrecks. The commentary this gal puts on the amazingly awful professional cakes is peerless. (except that there are other funny cake!blogs)

You mention the knitting so I thought I'd recommend something related - This is CRAFT magazine's blog. Lotta cool crafty things to ooh and ahh over and maybe even attempt.

A blog of people doing cool (crafty) things - with SCIENCE! Evil, evil science.

You've probably already heard of PostSecret, so I'll steal a description again, PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people
mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard.
http://postsecret.blogspot.com/ So compelling. like microstories.
http://www.xkcd.com/ Is pretty much *the* webcomic I read. For all fearers of velociraptors. Or lovers of language, math, and romance.
http://boingboing.net/ Is another wunderkammern. And a popculture blog thing. It calls itself "A Directory of Wonderful Things." IT IS.
For the ultimate timesink in crafting, check out craftster.org - the 'hot new topics' section is a great place to start. My favorite sub-forums are finished clothing, the crafting challenges, and the clothing reconstructions. Some amazing talent there.
