bullet points
Aug. 14th, 2009 11:34 am* I am attempting not to choose where I apply to go for study abroad by whatever country has the highest concentration of my flist. This is probably going to fail horribly. *grins* Come! Pimp your English-speaking country and your alma mater out to me! Tulane has programs at approximately five million schools in the U.K. (six in London alone) and two in Australia. And one in Washington D.C., but I don't think I really need anyone to rec the U.S. at me. (Tulane's study abroad programs are here, if anyone happens to be interested; I would be surprised if you were. I mostly just want to flee the country for a little while.)
* And people wonder why I put that line in Dust 16 about Narnians decorating everything. FOR GOOD REASON. Ships are pretty, I know, you don't have to tell me that, but is it too much for me to drool over the scene where the sea monster nearly crushes the Dawn Treader to bits? Not least because, well, sea monster. (Don't cut that scene, Apted and new screenwriter whom I don't trust! But then again, why would they? I mean...sea serpent.)
* Fic up at
houseofpevensie: first, from me and
aella_irene Where the Heart Is (Pauli Pevensie on Jack's funeral), Rough Seduction (Alambil/Piotr), Emotion in Motion (first-time Jack/Helen), and Love's Mysteries (Helen, finding out that getting sex ed when you're the High King's daughter is very difficult). Second, from me, When the Wind Is Wild With Shouting (more Pauli, this time with Lucinde Pevensie). And third, the list of Dramatis Personae, for all the times you've read Junior Pevensie fic and wondered who the hell these people are and why they're important.
* I really have to start packing up to move back to Tulane next week. I should have started this a week ago, but I'm going to see about shipping my boxes a little later than I should have (I'm moving in early) so that they arrive after the move-in rush. There's not a lot I need immediately, especially since I kind of doubt I'll really be wearing my ten pairs of jeans in New Orleans in August, or any of my slightly heavier clothing. (Note to self: this year, bring an outfit that I can wear when I fly back to Washington in December. You know, where the weather is COLD IN DECEMBER. This I can obviously ship.)

2. What universities are your options in Australia? I can give you further pimping when I know what they are!

Date: 2009-08-15 01:04 am (UTC)I can tell you from personal experience, the History department are *kick-arse*, and have a really good range of US history courses (which I have not taken) - I think the US historians collectively lean toward the left-wing, for centre-right analysis you have to go to the Centre for US Studies. Still. There's a really popular course on the history of New York City, that's been running for years.
The English department are even *more* awesome. I've only worked with their medievalists, but they have a huge range of courses on, well, everything.
I know you're trying to get as FAR AWAY from Japanese language as you can, but a couple of my best friends are Asian studies majors and I note you've picked up a random gender studies course: I can recommend, second-hand, Gender In Modern Asia and Gender In East Asian History And Culture. The former has a tutorial presentation option on yaoi ;).
Um. So... USyd is fun? There's a pretty good network for international / exchange students, I believe, with weekend trips off to here there and wherever else.
I would recommend you apply for a place in a College, or International House, or Sydney University Village. Thing is, with those, you'll have to apply quite a bit earlier than you expect - I know a couple of my friends either missed out or only just scraped in because the application dates are much earlier than you expect. SUV you'd have the advantage of being able to cook for yourself, in most of the apartments there.
Furthermore, if you were at USyd I would a) visit and b) delegate People to catch up with you when you get there. My People are, for the most part, quite shy, and very tolerant of shyness in other people.
Ummm... I don't know, what kind of things are you interested in doing while on exchange ASIDE from coursework?

Date: 2009-08-15 01:33 am (UTC)This has been the summer of missing deadlines. Any deadlines from here on out I expect to hunt down and beat within an inch of their lives. *grins* *pokes at Sydney website* ...given that they have Tulane's address as being in Houston, though...
Oh, man, I don't even know. Get out? Explore? See the country? Connect with the local fangirls? At the moment, my current standard for looking seriously at a study abroad program is, "Is there someone on my flist in the general area?" which is perhaps not the best qualification, but hey, there are worse...

Date: 2009-08-15 01:39 am (UTC)Well, if you are at USyd, you will be OBLIGED to come down to Canberra and visit me. See the civic monuments and all that. I might be able to take you up to my parents' place, which is a bit more countrified... LOCAL FANGIRLS we can provide :D. LOTS of them. If you're around in, oh, June or July, there is Supanova, for one thing. ;)
