Oh my god, I think today has been my least productive day since I spent four days of Thanksgiving break not leaving the building and fucking up my sleep schedule in 2008, which is not true, as I did things today, and also, I left the building. It just feels really unproductive, since I haven't done anything school-related. I went to the grocery store, called my mother (I'm one of those people who makes phone calls while walking places, thanks to my paranoia about my roommates listening in on my phone calls), went to Rite Aid, then watched a lot of TV and played with yarn the rest of the day.
Well. And I figured out how to do this to my hair. I don't know if it actually looks like that since I can't see the back of my head, but in theory I know how to do it!
Yes, the evening's still young, I could read something for school if I wanted, but I cast on for a new knitting project today and I want to play with it. (Christmas knitting! IT HAS BEGUN.)

Date: 2011-10-02 07:27 am (UTC)Also, yay for new hairstyles! I can't do that one. My hair may or may not be able to physically do it, but if it is possible, it would look horrible because I have so much hair.

Date: 2011-10-02 02:34 pm (UTC)I legit have no idea how that one looks on my head -- I should probably get a hand mirror at some point so I can, you know, do that -- but it's easy and fun and gets my hair up off my neck. This is one I've been doing a lot lately, or at least I suspect it looks more like that than like this, which is what it's supposed to be.

Date: 2011-10-02 04:43 pm (UTC)Other methods of seeing the back of your head: camera + mirror; webcam; camera + another person. Though they all have their difficulties. Personally I've been really lazy lately and only doing english braids (though I did try a cable braid...that was fun). I should do a vortex bun again.

Date: 2011-10-02 04:54 pm (UTC)I have not yet figured out how to take a picture of the back of my head, even with a mirror! My arms don't bend that way. *sighs* And so far I have drawn the line at asking my roommates to take pictures of the back of my head, since I still hesitate at going out to look at myself in the mirror when they're out there. (I should really get a mirror for my room, but I just don't feel like it's worth it at this point.)
This is a hairstyle I really like, although lately I've stopped rolling it up into the bun and just leaving it as a side braid, which also looks pretty cool.
I really want to try doing a fishtail braid sometime. Also this, but I suspect that I'm going to have the same problem with that as I do with heidi braids and top knots -- I have a lot of hair and it's really heavy, so when I pile it on top of my hair, my neck gets tired within a couple of hours and remains sore for the rest of the day, even after I take my hair down. Although maybe not, since there might not be as much bulk in that one.

Date: 2011-10-02 05:12 pm (UTC)I do the over-the-shoulder shot when I take pictures of the back of my head, though usually it takes several takes before I get a picture which is actually aimed at the back of my head.
I can't do those off-center hairstyles. Doesn't your head feel unbalanced when you do that one?
Fishtail braids...apparently, people have problems with them. Which I really don't understand, because it's totally the easiest braid other than the rope braid. I don't do them because they make my hair look fat. (yes, really.)
Apparently, one of the things that makes your hair feel heavier when it's up is how far it sticks out, so if you have heavy hair you might want to do a different bun than that one.

Date: 2011-10-02 05:21 pm (UTC)Not really. I think the weight of the hair is still distributed pretty evenly because of the side braid; I've never had any noticeable problems with my head inclining to the right or left with a side chignon, although I have with buns or top knots, where it's an effort to keep my head upright sometimes, depending on where the bun is. (I've been tending towards lower and lower buns recently, which is interesting -- I'm probably out of practice with having all my hair piled up in a high bun, which I used to do a lot more.)
I've tried the fishtail once or twice, but I tend to get frustrated fast. *cough*

Date: 2011-10-02 05:34 pm (UTC)Lower buns--I don't know, they feel lazier somehow, even when they're the exact same bun except lower down. But I can't manage anything higher up than midway anyway, and even that takes a lot of work, so...meh.
Well, like I said, apparently a lot of people have problems with the fishtail. Maybe I think it's easy because I just think of it as french braiding with 2 strands, no scalp hair, and no crossovers of actual strands (which actually makes it sound nothing like french braiding at all, lol). And remember to take from the bottom, not the top. ...that probably wasn't actually helpful, was it?

Date: 2011-10-02 05:44 pm (UTC)I've managed to do top buns by bending over so that my head is pointed towards the floor, then brushing my hair upwards from the back of my neck to the top of my head before gathering the hair into a high ponytail, then twisting it into a bun from there. (Yeah, I start my buns from a ponytail, I've never had any luck doing it any other way. The other day I watched a girl in front of me in class put her hair in a bun with only her fingers -- no bobby pins, no hairties, nothing. It was kind of riveting. Granted, she had pretty short hair and it didn't last very long, but still.)
I will try it again later today! Because I think it does look very cool and I want to try it.
I've always wanted to curl my hair, but I don't have the patience for it and my hair doesn't hold a curl very well. The closest I've gotten is when it's up in braids or tiny buns all day, and when it comes out it's all curly. So maybe if I kept it like that all night, then wore it down the next day...

Date: 2011-10-02 06:00 pm (UTC)I seriously do not get how people can do *anything* by flipping their hair over. My hair gets so tangled whenever I do that...and because it's distributed differently I can't get a brush or comb through it. I think I only need a couple more inches to do a knot bun (the ones with only your hair), which is kind of exciting though I suspect I'm going to do it once and no more. My hair's so thick that it takes forever to reach a length where I can do styles--for instance, some people can do the lazy wrap bun at armpit length; I couldn't do it until I hit midback.
Braiding makes my hair wavy for a long time, but YMMV. Braiding/bunning while your hair's damp helps the waves form/stay.

Date: 2011-10-02 07:53 pm (UTC)See, I shower at night and then french braid my (still-wet) hair to sleep, so it's still slightly damp in the morning, which usually makes it easier for me to do my hair. Since I shower every evening, I've never been able to figure out how long the waves will stay in my hair -- I think the best waves I ever got were from doing several tiny buns and from the crown braid.

Date: 2011-10-02 09:31 pm (UTC)I will never understand how some people have hair that's easier to work with when it's damp. I can't do anything with mine until it's 95% dry (which is, you know, five hours later). If you damp-braid to sleep anyway, it should be relatively easy to put your hair into a style you think might give you good waves; when you take your hair down in the morning, if you like your hair you can leave it down, and if you don't like it you can put it up. Though buns are a bit hard to sleep in. I know that some people use pure aloe vera gel to define their curls/waves more, but I don't know if it works the same way for womanmade curls.
...It's possible that I'm a bit of a hair nerd.

Date: 2011-10-02 10:48 am (UTC)Hurrah for Christmas knitting! I am about to cast on a new baby hat, after I got sick of frogging the last one. I should have two finished for Christmas...

Date: 2011-10-02 02:41 pm (UTC)I have cast on for Saroyan for my grandmother. Only in a different yarn weight and needle size, and since last night I have been staring at it going, "Is it too stiff? Is it not drapey enough? Should I rip it out and start over again with a bigger needle?" Ah, knitting.
